According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): The condition of heart pain accompanied by inability to eat is caused by the accumulation of cold pathogens within, which invade the Spleen and affect the collaterals of the Heart. The Heart belongs to Yang Qi, while cold belongs to Yin Qi. When cold invades the Heart, Yin and Yang contend with each other, and cold and heat clash, thus causing pain. The Spleen governs the digestion and transportation of food and fluids; if cold pathogens reside therein, the Spleen Qi becomes cold and weak, unable to handle food and fluids. The Heart is Fire, and the Spleen is Earth; they are in a mother-son relationship. Since both are invaded by pathogenic factors, pain occurs, along with the inability to eat. (From Volume 19)
*Guangji Fang* (Prescriptions from Guangji Hospital) treats long-standing heart pain radiating to the hypochondrium, where cold qi condenses causing pain and inability to eat. Formula: Gaoliangjiang Tang (Galangal Decoction).
Gaoliangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 10 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 10 fen), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 8 fen), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 10 fen, processed with heat), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 8 fen), Taoren (Persicae Semen, 50 seeds, skin and tip removed), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 8 fen), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 8 fen), Helile (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus, 5 fen).
The above nine herbs are cut, boiled in eight sheng of water until reduced to two sheng and eight he, strained to remove dregs, and divided into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk six or seven li. Take two doses consecutively. Avoid pork, raw/cold foods, greasy foods, sticky foods, and adzuki beans. (From Volume 4)
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) treats frequent heart pain, inability to eat, and heavy pain in the head. Formula: Wutou Wan (Aconite Pill).
Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 6 fen, prepared), Jiao (Zanthoxyli Fructus, 6 fen, perspired), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 4 fen), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 fen).
The above four herbs are pounded into powder and mixed with honey to form pills. Administer four pills the size of soybeans with wine, gradually increasing the dose. Avoid raw green onions. (From Volume 1)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: The Heart is the master of all viscera; its main meridians must not be injured. If the main meridians are injured and cause pain, death may occur in the morning if onset is in the evening, or in the evening if onset is in the morning, leaving no time for treatment. The so-called heart pain described here results from wind-cold pathogens invading the branch collaterals of the Heart. Thus, it forms a chronic condition that does not lead to immediate death, has periodic attacks, and persists without cure for a long time. (From Volume 16)
*Guangji Fang* treats heart pain persisting for thirty years without cure. To administer anthelmintics on the first ten days of the lunar month. Formula: Leiwan Heshi San (Omphalia Powder).
Leiwan (Omphalia Lapidea, 8 fen), Heshi (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos, 8 fen), Guanzhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma, 8 fen), Yelangya (Sanguisorbae Radix, 8 fen), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 8 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 8 fen), Binglang (Arecae Semen, 8 fen).
The above seven herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. On an empty stomach, boil half the volume of water used for cooking an egg with honey, and take one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) of the powder twice daily. If the condition is severe, no more than three doses are needed for recovery, aiming for bowel movement. Avoid raw green onions, raw/cold foods, greasy foods, pork, fish, adzuki beans, and garlic. (From Volume 4)
*Fan Wang Fang* treats long-standing heart pain. Formula: Wutou Chishizhi Wan (Aconite and Halloysit Rubra Pill).
Chishizhi (Halloysit Rubra), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Jiao (Zanthoxyli Fructus, perspired), Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata).
The above five herbs are taken in equal parts, powdered, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take three pills, three times a day, stopping when effective. Chishizhi should be selected for its mottled red texture. Avoid pork, cold water, and raw green onions. (From Volume 18)
*Bixiao Fang* treats heart pain lasting thirty years.
Taoren (Persicae Semen, 7 seeds, skin and tip removed).
The single herb is ground, mixed with hot water, and taken in one dose. Taking it with wine is also effective. (Recorded in *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* and *Jingxin Lu*, From Volume 5)
*Gujin Luyan Fang* treats long-standing heart pain and abdominal pain persisting for years, recurring at fixed times. Severe attacks last several days with inability to eat, accompanied by passage of dried blood. No prescriptions in the world could cure this. Zhen Liyan prescribed Xijiao Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Pill), which cured the patient in a few days.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 2 fen, crushed), Shexiang (Moschus, 2 fen, broken), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 4 fen, bright quality, ground), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 fen), Mangcao (Adenophorae Radix, 2 fen, processed with heat), Xin Yi Hua (Magnoliae Flos, 2 fen, roasted), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 20 seeds, heart and skin removed), Chizu Wugong (Scolopendra, 2 specimens, feet removed, processed with heat).
The above thirteen herbs are pounded, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Take one pill with water, starting in the morning and gradually increasing to three pills, stopping when bowel movement occurs. Avoid raw green onions, pork, wild boar meat, asparagus, and fresh blood products. (Another version lacks Fuzi; *Qianjin Fang* includes Xionghuang 2 fen, From Volume 8)
Treatment for heart pain feeling like insect bites, tossing and turning as if dying and incurable.
Alternative method: Thoroughly crush Rehmannia juice, mix with flour to make "cold noodles" (Lengtao), do not add salt, and consume in one meal. The insects will be expelled. If not expelled, take another dose; expulsion is certain and the disease will heal. In the Zhengyuan era, Cui Kang, the Tongshi Sheren, had a daughter suffering from heart pain with faint breath nearing death. She suddenly remembered this prescription. After taking it, she vomited an object about one cun square, resembling a toad, without eyes or feet, but seemingly having a mouth. It was likely eaten by this creature. Cui Kang said that in previous years, he saw a relative suffer from heart pain and vomit a moving worm after accidentally eating Rehmannia. He did not then realize that Rehmannia cold noodles could kill such worms. He kept the worm in a small bamboo tube, added some Rehmannia cold noodles, and soon observed it dissolved into water. However, he realized these cold noodles indeed kill parasites, ensuring permanent relief from heart pain. Having obtained this prescription, Cui Kang saved three or four people with miraculous effect. This is a hand-copied prescription.
*Jingxin Lu* treats heart pain persisting for forty years without cure.
Take the sediment juice of Shumi (Panicum miliaceum), warm and drink as much as tolerated. (From Volume 1)
