Cui’s method for selecting a wet nurse: The wet nurse's blood and vital essence transform into breast milk. The manifestation of the five emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, fear) as good or bad is entirely generated by her qi and blood. Therefore, one who nurses an infant must have a gentle and kind temperament, a decent physical appearance, and a somewhat intelligent countenance; seeking perfection is impossible. One need only select someone free from fox odor, goiter (neck mass), asthma with cough, scabies, leprosy-like skin diseases, tinea capitis (white baldness), ulcers, thickened lips, deafness, nasal obstruction, epilepsy, and such ailments. Such a person may be used to feed the infant. If old moxibustion scars are seen on her body, it indicates she previously suffered from diseases; this must be handled with caution.
Liu’s prescription for treating infants with restless sleep, frightful crying, refusal to suckle, Hu Jing Wan (Tiger Eye Pill). (Highly effective for severe infantile heat)
Rhinoceros Horn (12 fen, powdered) Scutellariae Radix (5 fen) Gardenia Seed (Zhi Zi Ren) Rhubarb (10 fen each) Tiger Eye (one piece, ground)
The above five herbs are pounded and sifted, then mixed with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Administer seven pills per dose, adjusting according to the child's age and size. The nursing mother should avoid hot-natured wheat products. This formula treats infantile wind-heat epilepsy; grind three pills in breast milk or bamboo sap for administration. Gradually increase the dosage until recovery. For infants under one hundred days old suffering from high fever within the postpartum period, grind four pills in milk and administer for immediate recovery.
Another prescription for newborns refusing to suckle.
Take two he of human milk and one cun of green onion white (scallion white), boil together for one boiling point, remove the onion, and feed to the infant for immediate effect. Alternatively, instill clam juice.
Another prescription for unstable feeding in newborns, occurring between the third and seventh day after birth, characterized by high fever, reddish complexion, and yellow discharge from the nostrils. This condition suggests a risk of developing "mouth-grasping" disease (tetanus neonatorum) or the presence of worms in the infant's jaw, resembling snails or yellow-headed white snails.
Collect half a he of bamboo sap by burning bamboo, mix with a small amount of Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang), and administer for recovery. Additionally, wipe the mouth with pork meat to draw out the worms or cause them to dissolve spontaneously, leading to recovery.
Another prescription for persistent vomiting in newborns.
Human Milk (2 he) Fagopyri Dibotryidis Rhizome (Ju Mai, a small amount) Salt (the size of two millet grains)
Boil the above three ingredients for three boiling points. Add Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang) the size of two rice grains, grind and mix well, then administer to stop vomiting and ensure recovery.
Another prescription for urinary retention in newborns.
Human Milk (4 he) Green Onion White (Scallion White, 1 cun)
Mix the two ingredients and decoct. Divide into four doses. This will promote urination and is highly effective.
