A short-acting prescription for treating cholera with vomiting, where qi rebellion causes inability to breathe or pant, uses the Dou Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean Seed) (1 sheng), Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome) (1 liang, washed), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) (2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix and Rhizome) (1 liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1 liang, honey-fried).
The above six herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng, taken warm at a dose of 7 he. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, seaweed, and Chinese cabbage. (Qian Jin Fang includes Gui Xin [Cinnamon Twig] 1 liang).
Another prescription treats sudden onset of cholera while traveling, where no medicine is available, breath is critical, doctors have left abandoning the patient, and all say death is certain. This prescription is used for treatment.
Lu Peng HT (Reed Flower) (a large handful), boiled until the flavor is strong, taken in one dose of 2 sheng will result in recovery; it has been proven effective. For those poisoned by eating fish and crab, taking this is especially good. ("Lu Peng HT" refers to Lu Hua [Reed Flower]; Bei Ji Ji Yan Wen Zhong Fan Wang are also found in Volume 4).
A simplified prescription for treating cholera with indigestion, borborygmus, abdominal pain, and persistent heat, uses Jie Geng Tang (Platycodon Decoction).
Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) (4 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizome) (5 liang), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) (3 liang), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 liang), Cang Mi (Rice) (1 sheng).
The above five herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 8 sheng of water. First, boil the rice until cooked, remove the rice, and use the remaining rice liquid to decoct the herbs. Reduce to 2 sheng, strain to remove dregs, and divide into doses. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, pork, and strong vinegar.
Jin Xiao Fang He Li Le San (Chebula Powder for Near-Efficacy) treats various wind pathogens, phlegm-cold, cholera with indigestion, and constipation/stagnant stool.
Take three Ke Li Le (Terminalia Chebula Fruit), crush them to obtain the peel, mix with wine, and take in one dose. After three to five doses, recovery occurs.
Bing Yuan Lun states: Gan Ou (Dry retching) is caused by rebellious Stomach Qi. It is called dry retching because there is the urge to vomit but nothing comes out. (From Volume 21).
Guang Ji Fang treats sudden incessant dry retching.
Break an egg, remove the white, and swallow several yolks to cure. (Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang and Zhang Wenzhong's formula are the same).
Another prescription:
Squeeze juice from fresh Ge Gen (Kudzu Root), take 1 sheng.
Another prescription:
Warm Zhe Gan Zhi (Sugarcane Juice) and take 1 sheng hot, three times a day. (One version says Gan Cao [Licorice Root] juice; Zhang Wenzhong's formula is the same, both from Volume 3).
Ji Yan Fang treats patients with dry retching.
Drink one cup of Yang Ru Zhi (Sheep Milk). (Qian Jin Fang is the same).
Another prescription for vomiting, rebellious Qi, and dry retching, uses Sheng Jiang Tang (Fresh Ginger Decoction).
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) (4 liang), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) (3 liang), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig) (2 liang), Ju Pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (2 liang), Fu Ling (Poria) (4 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix and Rhizome) (1 liang), Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome and Radix) (4 liang).
The above eight herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Take 5 he per dose, three times a day. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, vinegar products, and raw green onions. (All from Volume 4).
Cui Shi treats vomiting in patients using Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction).

The above four herbs are cut into pieces. Boil Pi Pa Ye in 1 dou of water to obtain 5 sheng of juice. Add the other three herbs (Ren Shen, etc.) and decoct until reduced to 3 sheng. Drink slowly in small amounts. (Xu Wang, Zhang Wenzhong, Qian Jin Fang are the same, from Volume 3).
