The *Qianjin Fang* states: In cases of Qi Extremity (Qi Ji, a severe disorder of Qi dynamics), the primary organ involved is the Lung. The Lung corresponds to Qi, and Qi harmonizes with the Lung. It is also stated that if illness occurs in autumn, it is termed Pi Bi (Skin Bi, a type of bi-syndrome affecting the skin). If Pi Bi persists and one is re-exposed to pathogenic factors associated with Geng-Xin days (days governed by Metal energy), the condition worsens, manifesting as symptoms in the upper chest region.
Next is the treatment for Qi Extremity complicated by Heat Injury. Symptoms include panting and wheezing with Qi rushing to the chest, frequent irritability, abdominal distension and pain, internal and external heat sensations, restlessness, vomiting, and anxiety. Use Da Qian Hu Tang (Major Peucedanum Decoction).
Ingredients: Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 8 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 4 liang each), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 4 pieces, roasted), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang), Gan Zao (Jujubae Fructus, dried, 12 pieces, split).
Cut the above eight herbs. Add nine sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid, remove the dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. Administer one dose every time the patient walks for four or five li. Avoid mutton and malt sugar.
Another prescription treats Qi Extremity with Heat Injury, where severe panting leads to hemoptysis (spitting blood), shortness of breath, anorexia, dry mouth and throat. Use Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Ingredients: Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium, cut, 1 sheng), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Xiao Mai (Tritici Fructus), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, cut, 1 sheng each), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 6 liang), Gan Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces, split and pitted), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, nodes removed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, roasted), Shi Gao (Gypsi Fibrosus, 6 liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton).
Cut the above nine herbs. Add ten dou of water, decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid, remove the dregs. Divide into three doses. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum), Song Cai (Brassica vegetables), and Wu Yi (Terminalia chebula).
Another prescription treats Qi Extremity with Heat Injury, characterized by Lung deficiency with profuse sweating, coughing with sputum, rebellious Qi ascending, and急促 panting. Use Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction).
Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 4 liang, nodes removed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, roasted), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 40 kernels, peel and tips removed, dual-kernel preferred), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 50 pieces, washed and quartered), Shi Gao (Gypsi Fibrosus, 6 liang, crushed), Zi Wan (Adenophorae Radix, 1 liang).
Cut the above eight herbs. Add nine sheng of water. First boil Ma Huang for two boils, skim off the foam on the surface. Then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid, remove the dregs. Divide into three doses. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum), raw Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Song Cai (Brassica vegetables), mutton, and malt sugar. (All formulas are cited from Volume 8).
