Shen Shi Fang (Deep Master's Prescriptions) treats Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) occurring within one to three days, for which diaphoresis (inducing sweating) is indicated. The prescription for this decoction is as follows:
Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen, 半斤) / Mume Fructus (Wu Mei, 14 pieces) / Scallion White (Cong Bai, one handful) / Fermented Soybean (Chi, 1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze).
The above four herbs are chopped. Boil with nine sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. After the first dose, cover thickly to induce sweating. Once sweat appears, wipe the body and apply powder.
Another formula, Mahuang Jieji Tang (Ephedra Muscle-Relieving Decoction), treats Taiyang disease persisting for three to four days with unresolved irritability and pain.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 3 liang, remove joints) / Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 1 liang, honey-fried) / Prunus Armeniaca Semen (Xing Ren, 70 pieces, remove skin and tips, stir-fry) / Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 2 liang).
The above four herbs are chopped. Boil with nine sheng of water. First boil Ephedra until the volume reduces by two sheng. Skim off the foam. Then add the remaining herbs and boil together. Obtain two and a half sheng of liquid. Strain to remove dregs. Take eight he per dose. Stop when sweating occurs. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai), and raw Scallions. (This formula is identical to Zhang Zhongjing's Mahuang Tang and the version in Sun Simiao's Qianjin Yi Fang).
Another formula, Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction), treats Taiyang disease after six or seven days where diaphoresis has failed to resolve the pathogen, presenting with vomiting and regurgitation, diarrhea, dysuria (difficulty urinating), chest and hypochondriac fullness and stuffiness, slight fever, and irritability.
Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) / Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) (each 3 liang) / Poria (Fuling, 4 liang) / Peucedani Radix (Qian Hu, 8 liang) / Pinelliae Rhizoma (Ban Xia, 1/2 sheng, washed).
The above five herbs are chopped. Boil with twelve sheng of water until reduced to six sheng. Divide into six doses. Take three times during the day and three times at night. Between meals, consume ginger congee. The condition is considered cured when urination becomes smooth. Avoid mutton, maltose syrup (YiTang), raw scallions, and vinegar products.
Another formula, Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction), treats Taiyang disease persisting for eight or nine days, characterized by heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), slippery and rapid pulse, mental confusion, high fever, heaviness, stiffness and spasms, occasional groaning. Although purgation (attacking the interior) has not yet been performed, the body remains heavy and stiff. This is because the exterior syndrome has not yet resolved. If detoxifying herbs are used directly, the spasms will not improve; if diaphoretics are used directly, the toxin may worsen. Since no existing formula addresses both exterior and interior simultaneously, the intention is to use Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction) to rescue the interior, while adding ingredients to resolve the exterior. Hence it is named Shigao Tang.
Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao) / Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian) / Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bai) / Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) (each 2 liang) / Fermented Soybean (Xiang Chi, 1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze) / Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi, 10 pieces, broken) / Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 3 liang, remove joints).
The above seven herbs are chopped. Boil with ten sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. Administer all within one day to induce sweating. After the first dose, slight sweating should occur. Subsequently, combine the remaining dose and take over two days. Maintain a state of slight sweating continuously. Stiffness, spasms, irritability, and confusion will resolve. If several bowel movements occur, the mind clears, speech returns, indicating the toxin is subduing. Avoid pork and cold water.
