Book Title: Waitai Miyao (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold from the Outer Cabinet)
Author: Wang Tao
Dynasty: Tang Dynasty, Tianbao 11th Year
Chapter: Three Formulas for Cat Ghost and Wild Path; Fifteen Formulas for Hanging Suicide
Category: Formulas
Translation of Original Text:
Regarding the etiology of "Cat Ghost," it is said to be a type of wild animal such as an old fox, transforming into a demon or ghost, and attaching itself to humans. Humans rear and worship it, similar to rearing Gu poison (a mythical venomous insect used for harm), using it to harm people. The symptoms include stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, a sensation as if internal organs are being eaten, vomiting blood, dysentery with blood, and death. Additionally, "Wild Path" refers to a masterless Gu poison. When someone rears and worships Gu poison to harm others, accumulating evil deeds leads to their death and extinction. The Gu poison then has no place to attach, floating between fields and roads. If it encounters and harms someone, the onset of illness resembles that of Gu poisoning, but because it is contracted in fields and roads, it is called "Wild Path." (All cited from Volume 25)
Qianjin Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats Cat Ghost and Wild Path diseases where patients sing and cry uncontrollably.
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, take a naturally deceased red snake, burn it to ash, grind it, and administer one cubic inch spoonful (Fangcunbi) with well water drawn at dawn. Take once daily.
Another formula to treat Cat Ghost when patients see cats or foxes and hear noises in their ears.
Xiangsi Zi (Abrus precatorius seed), Bimazi (Ricinus communis seed), Badou (Croton tiglium seed) (each one piece); Zhusha (Cinnabar, powdered); La (Beeswax) (each four zhu).
Grind the above five ingredients into pills. Take a pill the size of a hemp seed and hold it in the mouth. Surround the patient with ashes. Place a bucket of ash fire in front. Spit the medicine into the fire, then draw a cross on the fire. The Cat Ghost will die. Avoid pork, Asparagus cochinchinensis, and raw blood-producing foods. (Yi Fang contains Xiaofen [Saltpeter], cited from Volume 26)
Gujin Luyan (Ancient and Modern Records of Verification) treats demonic possession by Cat Ghost when patients refuse to admit the presence of ghosts. Deer Horn Powder Formula.
Crush deer horn flakes into powder. Administer one cubic inch spoonful with water. The patient will then speak the truth. (Cited from Volume 45)
Etiology: People who are frustrated and unfulfilled often harbor resentment and commit suicide by hanging themselves with ropes or other objects around their necks, known as hanging suicide. If discovered early and treated promptly, recovery is easier.
Zhouhou Beiji Fang (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) by Ge Hong treats hanging suicide where the chest is still slightly warm; even after a long time, survival is possible.
Slowly untie the rope without cutting it. Hang the patient by their hair so that their feet are about five cun off the ground. Plug both nostrils. Insert a reed tube into the mouth down to the pharynx. Have someone blow air into the tube. After a while, rumbling sounds may be heard in the abdomen, indicating the passage of Qi. If the patient raises their hands to grab, hold them firmly. Continue blowing air alternately. If revived... (Text missing here)
Another formula:
Blow powdered Gleditsia sinensis fruit (Zaojiao) mixed with scallion leaves into both nostrils. Reverse the airflow, then re-insert. (Same as Qianjin Fang, Beiji Fang, and Wenzhong Fang)
Another formula:
Blow into both ears using a reed tube. Switch blower if necessary until revival occurs. If Qi circulation is restored, slowly administer a small amount of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), followed by thin rice gruel. (All cited from Volume 3)
Zhang Zhongjing stated that for hanging suicide, if the body is cold from morning to evening, it can still be treated; if from evening to morning, it is more difficult. This may be due to the prevalence of Yin Qi. However, in summer, nights are shorter than days and it is hot, so treatment should still be effective. He also stated that if the chest is slightly warm, survival is possible even after more than a day. One must slowly untie the rope without cutting it, gently move the head, regulate breathing, and have two people blow into both ears using tubes. This is the best method and ensures survival. All sources agree on this treatment. (Same as Zhouhou Fang, Beiji Fang, Wenzhong Fang, and Gujin Luyan)
Beiji Fang:
Cover the mouth and nose with thick felt and press down. Have two people blow forcefully into both ears. Revival can occur within the time it takes to cook a meal. (Same as Zhouhou Fang, Qianjin Fang, Wenzhong Fang, Jiyan Fang, and Duanju Fang)
Another formula:
Pull the hair to suspend the body. Plug both ears to prevent air entry. Use a scallion leaf to clear the nose. Two people blow forcefully. Bite the heels. Revival occurs. Alternatively, plug the nose and blow into the mouth. (Same as Duanju Fang and Gujin Luyan)
Fan Wang's formula for hanging suicide:
Suspend by the hair so that the feet just touch the ground. Revival occurs after a short while.
Another formula:
Immediately cover the mouth and nose with hands to prevent any exhalation. After two shichen (four hours), if Qi returns, revival occurs. (Same as Beiji Fang, Wenzhong Fang, Gujin Luyan, and Zhouhou Fang)
Another formula:
Tightly bind the body with silk cloth to make it firm. Transport the body by cart or ox for about thirty li. Have people walk on the cart, stepping on the shoulders to stimulate respiration, and blow into the ears.
Another formula:
Insert Songzi You (Pine nut oil) into the mouth until it reaches the pharynx. Revival occurs.
Qianjin Fang treats hanging suicide:
Pour Lanqing Zhi (Indigo juice) into the mouth. Calm the mind and body. Slowly relax. Do not cut the rope or lift the body abruptly. If the chest is still warm, prick the rooster comb and drip blood into the mouth. Revival occurs. Use a hen for male patients and a rooster for female patients.
Another formula:
Take Jishi Bai (White part of chicken feces) the size of a jujube. Mix with half a cup of wine. Pour into the mouth and nose. Revival occurs.
Another formula:
Collect dust from the roof beam, size of soybeans. Place each portion into a tube. Four people each hold a tube. Blow simultaneously into both ears and nostrils with full force. Revival occurs.
Another formula:
Urine into the nose, mouth, eyes, and ears. Grab a tuft of hair the thickness of a brush handle and pull. Immediate revival. (All cited from Volume 26)
Shanfan Fang treats the Five Extinction Deaths:
One is hanging suicide, two is crushing by walls, three is drowning, four is nightmare/demonic possession, five is childbirth complications. For all, take Banxia (Pinellia ternata rhizome), one liang, crush and sieve. Blow a dose the size of a soybean into the nostril. Revival occurs. If the chest is warm, even after one day, revival is possible. (Same as Qianjin Fang)
