Ji Yan Fang (Collected Verified Prescriptions) for treating vitiligo (Bai Bo, a skin condition characterized by depigmented patches) on the neck, nape, and face. The lesions spread gradually and resemble tinea (ringworm), but without ulcers or pustules. The following methods are applicable:
Apply dried eel fat to the affected area. First, wash and wipe the vitiligo patches clean. Gently scrape the area with your fingers until it feels slightly painful and rough, then dry it. Apply the eel fat afterward. It usually heals after one application; for difficult cases, no more than three applications are needed. (Same as recorded in Shen Shi Fang and Qian Jin Fang.)
Another prescription:
Take snake slough (Ophichus skin) and rub it repeatedly over the affected area hundreds of times. Discard the snake skin in the grass. (Same as recorded in Shen Shi Fang and Qian Jin Fang.)
Another prescription for body vitiligo:
Use water from hollow trees to wash the affected area. Crush cinnamon bark into powder, mix with saliva, and apply to the vitiligo patches. Do this three times daily. (Same as recorded in Qian Jin Fang and Wen Zhong Fang, both found in Volume VII.)
Gu Jin Lu Yan Fang (Ancient and Modern Recorded Verified Prescriptions) for facial vitiligo. (From Xu Wang's prescriptions.)
Ingredients: Old silk fabric, cicada necks, brooms, steamer straps, dried meat, shoe soles, snake skin.
Take equal parts of these seven ingredients. On the night of a lunar eclipse, burn them together during the peak of the eclipse. Grind and sieve the ashes. Take one fang cun bi (a traditional Chinese measure for powder, approx. 2-3 grams) with wine, twice daily. Stop after two doses. Mix the powder with strong vinegar and apply to the white patches; it will be removed after one application.
Another prescription:
Wrap lotus leaves together and allow them to ferment until they rot significantly. Wipe the affected area to make it warm, then apply the fermented material. The condition will improve. This is a prescription from two princesses.
Another prescription for generalized vitiligo that has persisted for years without healing. This is attributed to wind deficiency. Use Sheng Chang Pu Jiu (Fresh Acorus Wine).
Ingredients: Land-grown Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 dan, finely cut and decocted separately), Asparagus Fern Root (Asparagi Radix, 1 jin, heart removed), Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata processed raw Tianxiong (Tianxiong, 3 liang, peeled, used raw), Hemp Seed (Cannabis Fructus, 1 sheng), Drynariae Rhizoma (Yinyu), Dried Lacquer (Gambir, Gan Qi), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Gan Di Huang), Polygala Root (Polygalae Radix, Yuan Zhi, 3 liang each, heart removed), Honeycomb (Apis Ceranae Nidus, Lu Feng Fang, 5 liang), Sophora Root (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, Ku Shen, 1 jin), Astragalus Root (Astragali Radix, Huang Qi, 0.5 jin), Angelica Pubescens Root (Pubescent Angelica Root, Du Huo).
Chop the above sixteen ingredients and place them in a silk bag. First, decoct the Acorus roots in 2 hu 5 dou of water, collecting 8 dou of liquid. Use this liquid to ferment approximately 1 hu 5 dou of rice. (Note: The original text contains fragmented characters "yong qi yi yu" which appear to be corrupted or incomplete instructions regarding the brewing process.)
Shan Fan Lun (Discourse on Deleting Redundancies) states: The origin of Five Viscera Exhaustion (Wu Zang Lao) lies in the dysfunction of the internal organs. It influences the rise and fall of life and death, and triggers the excess and deficiency patterns of myriad diseases. It causes the reversal of Yin and Yang and the obstruction of Cou Li (skin texture and interstices). All these arise due to overexertion and emaciation. Hence, it is called Five Viscera Exhaustion.
