According to *Qianjin Yifang* (Supplement to the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold): If an infant's occipital bone is undeveloped at birth, they will die after being able to speak; if the knee bones are undeveloped, they will die after being able to squat; if the metacarpal bones are undeveloped, they will die after being able to crawl; if the calcaneus (heel bone) is undeveloped, they will die after being able to walk; if the patella (kneecap) is undeveloped, they will die after being able to stand; if the body muscles are lax and cannot hold their shape, death ensues; if there is "fish mouth" (fissure of the anus resembling a fish's mouth), death ensues. If there is no flesh between the thighs, death ensues; if the area below the chin is ulcerated, death ensues; if the penis does not erect, death ensues; if the lower part of the scrotum is white, death ensues; if it is red, death ensues.
The methods for physiognomy regarding an infant's lifespan are extensive; here only a dozen or so items are briefly described.
If an infant's genitals are large and the color matches the body skin tone at birth, they will grow up to be an adult. If an infant has a whorl of hair on the forehead at birth, it indicates early nobility but may harm the parents. If an infant's crying sound is continuous and unbroken at birth, it indicates longevity. If the crying sound stops and then rises sharply and urgently, it indicates short life. If an infant sweats blood at birth, they will face many misfortunes and have a short life. If an infant's gaze is misaligned and eyes move frequently at birth, they are not considered auspicious. If an infant opens their eyes by themselves at birth, they will not grow up to adulthood. If an infant feels entirely weak and soft as if having no bones at birth, they will not grow up to adulthood. If an infant has sparse hair at birth, they will be dull and disobedient. If an infant has a small umbilicus at birth, they will have a short life. If an infant sits, walks, speaks, or grows teeth early at birth, and possesses a malignant nature, they are not considered auspicious. If an infant has four cracks on the top of the head at birth, they will not grow up to adulthood. If an infant's scalp hair does not grow densely around the entire head at birth, they will not grow up to adulthood. If the crying sound is scattered, they will not grow up to adulthood. If the crying sound is deep, they will not grow up to adulthood.
If there is no blood in the umbilicus at birth, it is a good omen. If the seam under the scrotum is open and black, it indicates longevity; if it is fresh white and large, it also indicates longevity. The discussion states: For infants aged three to ten years, observing their temperament and spirit can indicate whether they will die young or live long. Children who are exceptionally smart and perceptive when young often have short lives; Xiang Tuo and Yan Hui are examples of such people. Children whose skeletal structure is fully developed, who carry themselves with dignity, move slowly and gracefully, and require time and effort to cultivate, tend to live long. Those who anticipate others' intentions and react quickly are also likely to have short lives; Yang Xiu and Kong Rong are examples. From this, one can roughly predict whether someone will die young or live long. This is like plum blossoms blooming early but failing to withstand the cold winter, whereas chrysanthemums bloom late and enjoy a full lifespan. Late maturation is a sign of longevity.
