The etiology stems from Kidney Qi connecting to the ears; the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is where numerous vessels converge. If excessive labor depletes the meridian blood, resulting in insufficient Qi and Blood, the converging vessels become deficient, allowing Wind Pathogens to take advantage of this weakness.
*Guangji Fang* (Extensive Prescriptions) treats tinnitus and a sensation of blockage in the ears with the Ear-Plugging Pill Formula:
Crotonis Fructus (Badi Dou), two seeds, peeled and roasted; Prunus Persicae Semen (Taoren), peeled and roasted, two seeds; Pini Resina (Songzhi), size of a soybean.
The above three ingredients are pounded into two pills, wrapped in silk/cotton, and inserted into the ear canal.
Another formula for treating roaring tinnitus:
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu); Crotonis Fructus (Badi Dou), peeled and roasted; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang); Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu); Magnetitum (Cishi); Asari Radix (Xixin) (each one fen).
The above six ingredients are pounded into powder, mixed with a small amount of Anseris Adip (Goose fat), wrapped in cotton, and inserted into the ear. Then, five sheng of salt, wrapped in cloth, are steamed hot and used to moxa/iron the Ermen (TE21) area, allowing warm Qi to penetrate into the ear. Replace when cold, repeating this several times. After recovery, frequently plug the ear with rolled loose hair, and avoid wind exposure.
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) treats constant ringing in the ears:
Cut fresh Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Dihuang) and insert it into the ear, changing it ten times daily until cured. Another method suggests wrapping it in paper and roasting it over mild fire for better efficacy. (From Volume IV)
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats tinnitus and deafness:
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui); Asari Radix (Xixin); Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi); Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong); Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) (each six zhu).
The above six ingredients are powdered. Mix with the brain of a male carp and decoct using the "three up, three down" method (boiling and cooling cycles). When the ointment emits fragrance, strain out the dregs. Insert an amount the size of a jujube pit into the ear, wrapped in cotton. Use six he of carp brain, refined over mild fire.
Another formula:
Tetrapanacis Medulla (Tongcao); Asari Radix (Xixin); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (each three fen); Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), four fen; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), one fen; Alumen (Fanshi), one fen; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each two fen); Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), six fen; Allii Cepae Juice (Congti), half he.
The above ten ingredients are pounded into powder. Mix with half a he of white goose fat as needed. Wrap an amount the size of a jujube pit in cotton and insert into the ear three times daily until cured. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another formula for deafness, where tinnitus sounds like flowing water, which if untreated for long leads to complete deafness:
Raw Aconiti Radix (Sheng Wutou), cleaned thoroughly, carved to the size of a jujube pit, and inserted into the ear. Change once daily; cure within three days. This also treats ear itching and sudden wind-induced deafness. (Both from Volume VI)
