According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) regarding jaundice: The patient experiences pain throughout the body, fever, and a deep yellow complexion. After seven or eight days, heat pathogens consolidate internally, and blood stasis should be discharged; the discharged blood resembles the shape of a liver, and the patient suffers from abdominal fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen. If the patient has dry, painful eyes, pain in the nasal bone, stiffness in both shoulders and the neck, and tightness in the waist and back, this indicates jaundice. The stool is difficult to pass; as long as urination becomes smooth, death need not be feared. There is no need for frequent bowel movements, as excessive defecation leads to abdominal distension and discomfort. This condition arises because cold-dampness remains at the exterior, causing heat to accumulate in the Spleen and Stomach. The interstices (pores) fail to open, and stagnant heat combats with undigested food, leading to stagnation and steaming without resolution, resulting in the obstruction of both urination and defecation. Consequently, the body and face turn yellow. In cases of severe jaundice, if the Cun Kou pulse (pulse at the radial artery near the palm) is imperceptible and breath from the mouth and nose is cold, these are untreatable signs leading to certain death. (From Volume 12)
In Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage), for various types of jaundice, the primary formula is Zhigao Fa Jian (Pork Fat and Hair Decoction).
Zhigao (Pork fat, 8 liang) Luankou (Disordered hair, one piece the size of a chicken egg)
Combine the two ingredients, simmer the hair in the pork fat until the hair dissolves completely, then grind and filter to remove fine dregs. Divide into two doses. The pathogen exits via urination. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, Wenzhong's works, *Qianjin Fang*, *Gujin Luyan*, *Shenshi Fang*, *Fanwang Fang* record the same case: a maid in the household of Taiyi Xiaowei Shi Tuo was cured twice after passing dry feces from the stomach; it is highly effective. From Volume 14)
*Shanfan* treats Tianxing Dure (Epidemic Toxic Heat), where heat penetrates the Zang-Fu organs and sinks into the marrow. It may manifest as Huangdan (Jaundice), Heidan (Black Jaundice), Chidan (Red Jaundice), Bai dan (White Jaundice), Gu dan (Grain Jaundice), Ma huang (Horse Yellow), etc., leading to sudden cessation of breathing. Gouti San (Melon Peduncle Powder) Formula.
Gouti (Melon peduncle, 14 pieces) Chi xiaodou (Red adzuki bean, 21 pieces) Shumi (Millet, 14 grains)
Grind the three ingredients into a powder. Take an amount the size of a soybean and insufflate it into both nostrils; this is very effective. If not cured, repeat every other day. (*Qianjin Fang*, *Fanwang Fang*, *Jiyan Fang* record the same)
Another Formula
Gouti (Melon peduncle, 14 pieces)
Take this single ingredient, boil in one sheng of water until reduced to five he, and take as one dose.
Another Formula
Yan (Salt, 1 sheng)
Wrap this single ingredient in paper, soak it wet, and burn until red-hot. Place it in three sheng of water and stir well. Filter through a hand towel and take as one dose. After taking the previous two formulas, yellow fluid will be vomited.
Cui Shi's treatment for jaundice, for poor families lacking medicine, follow this formula.
Take three large sheng of willow branches, boil in ten sheng of water until a thick decoction is obtained. Squeeze out half a sheng and take as one dose.
Another Formula for treating jaundice and regulating the Heart and Abdomen
Manjingzi (Vitex fruit, one large he, cleaned)
Grind this single ingredient finely, mix with one sheng of water, grind again, filter to obtain juice (approximately one large cup). Take all at once. Soon, diarrhea will occur naturally, or vomiting may happen, relieving abdominal tension. Sweating may also occur, leading to recovery. (*Beiji Fang*, Wenzhong's works, *Shenshi Fang* record the same, all from Volume 1)
*Nianyan Milu* treats jaundice. Gouti Tang (Melon Peduncle Decoction) Formula.
Gouti (Melon peduncle, 1 liang) Chi xiaodou (Red adzuki bean, 49 pieces) Dingxiang (Clove, 14 pieces)
Grind the three ingredients into powder. Boil in one sheng of water until reduced to four he, and clarify. Divide into two doses and instill into both nostrils. (From Volume 10)
*Jiuji Fang* treats thirty-six types of jaundice.
Burn one egg including the shell to ash. Mix with one he of vinegar and warm it. Combine and take all at once. For those with extreme yellowing of the body and eyes, no more than three eggs are needed. Worms may emerge from the nose; this is miraculous.
Another Formula for various jaundices, including Anhuang (Dark Jaundice) with dim eyes, Da jiao chi hei huang (Severe Red-Black Jaundice) with initial limb twitching, internal jaundice with thirst, Danhuang, red-eyed jaundice, Shenhuang (Kidney Jaundice), urinary obstruction, shortness of breath, chest oppression, and five-colored jaundice. Gouti San (Melon Peduncle Powder) Formula.
Dingxiang (Clove) Gouti (Melon peduncle) Chi xiaodou (Red adzuki bean) (10 pieces each)
Finely grind and sieve the three ingredients. Mix with a quantity of warm vinegar equivalent to one egg and take. Highly effective. (All from Volume 17, *Guangji Fang* records the same)
*Bixiao Fang* treats all types of jaundice. Jiang Jiu received this from nine places; his father Yuan Shi suffered from jaundice and found this extremely effective. Yinchen Tang (Artemisia Decoction) and Pills Formula.
Yinchen (Artemisia capillaris, 4 liang) Dahuang (Rhubarb root, 3 liang) Huangqin (Scutellaria root, 3 liang) Zhizi (Gardenia fruit, 3 liang)
Cut the four ingredients, boil in five sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses and take on an empty stomach. Alternatively, grind into powder, mix with honey to form pills. Take twenty pills with water, gradually increasing to twenty-five pills according to the condition. Use decoction for severe cases rather than pills, taken once daily. Avoid mutton, alcohol, wheat products, and hot-natured foods. Continue until cured. Indicated for yellow urine and yellowing of the body.
Another Formula for various jaundices, even when eyes are already yellow. Gouti San (Melon Peduncle Powder) Formula.
Dingxiang (Clove, 1 fen) Chi xiaodou (Red adzuki bean, 1 fen) Gouti (Melon peduncle, 1 fen) Another version adds Shumi (Millet, 1 fen)
Grind the three ingredients into powder. Take all at once before meals with warm water. Diarrhea and vomiting of yellow fluid will follow. Repeat if not cured. (All from Volume 1)
*Qianjin Fang* treats Huangdan (Jaundice). Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill) Formula.
Dahuang (Rhubarb root, 2 liang) Tingli (Descurainia seed, 3 liang)
Grind and sieve the two ingredients into powder. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take ten pills before meals, three times daily. Stop when cured.
Another Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill) Formula
Dahuang (Rhubarb root, 2 liang) Huanglian (Coptis rhizome, 3 liang) Huangqin (Scutellaria root) Huangbai (Phellodendron bark) (1 liang each) Qu yi (Medicated leaven husk, 5 he)
Grind and sieve the five ingredients into powder. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take three pills before meals, three times daily. If ineffective, increase to five pills. Avoid pork and cold water. (All from Volume 10)
