Etiology: Some individuals have clear vision during the day but cannot see anything at night. This condition is commonly referred to as "night blindness" (Que Mu), meaning one sees nothing like a bird at dusk. (From Volume 28)
Guangji Formula for Treating Night Blindness: Difuzi Wan (Kochia Seed Pill)
Difuzi (Kochiae Fructus, 5 liang); Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen, 1 sheng)
Crush and sieve the above two ingredients. Mix with rice water to form pills. Take 20-30 pills with warm water after each meal.
For night blindness where vision is lost by evening, Baipi San (Cypress Bark Powder):
Laobai Bai Pi (Cupressi Cortex, 4 liang); Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Pulpa, 2 liang, roasted); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma); Difuzi (Kochiae Fructus, 4 liang each)
Crush and sieve the above four ingredients to make a powder. Take two fangcun bi (square-inch scoops) with clear wine after each meal, three to four times daily, until cured.
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month or the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, collect Di Cao (Plantago herb), wash it clean, dry it in the shade, grind it into powder, mix with wine, and take one fangcun bi three times daily. Cure within one month. (From Volume 4)
Qianjin Yi Formula for Night Blindness:
One pig liver, cut finely. Boil in ten dou of water until cooked. Place in a small-mouthed vessel. While hot, hold the eyes over the vessel to steam them. Keep eyes wide open, do not close. Reheat when cool. Continue until cured. (From Volume 11)
Etiology: The Yin and Yang Qi of the body all ascend to the eyes. If Wind Pathogen and Phlegm Qi invade the Zang-Fu organs, causing imbalance between deficiency and excess in organ Qi, Qi rushes upward to the eyes. Over time, this causes membranes (Yi) to grow on the eyeballs. If these membranes persist, they gradually expand and cover the pupil. (From Volume 28)
Shenshi Formula for Eye Membranes:
Hufen (Lead Carbonate) applied to the membrane can treat chronic membranes lasting three years.
Another formula for black membranes covering the pupil with raised skin:
Beizi (Concha Meretricis, 4 pieces, calcined); Kongqing (Azurite, 1 liang); Fanshi (Alumen, 1 liang, boiled until liquid evaporates)
Grind the above three ingredients into powder. Apply an amount the size of millet seeds to the membrane twice daily.
Another formula for eye membranes:
Shuzhong Baiyu (Bookworms/White fish from books) ground into powder; apply a small amount to the membrane.
Qianjin Formula for Red Eyes and Membranes:
Wuzeigu (Sepiae Endoconcha, remove shell) and Qiandan (Minium) in equal parts. Grind finely, mix with white honey to form a paste, steam for half a meal-time. Apply a small amount to the eye until cured.
Another depuffing formula:
Beichi (Dentaria, 10 pieces, calcined) sifted into fine powder. Apply an amount the size of a broad bean to the membrane twice daily. Lie supine while another person applies it. Wait until enough time has passed to cook one dan of rice, then wipe off. For polyps, add Zhenzhu (Pearl) in equal proportion to Beizi, ground to powder.
Another formula for falling white membranes obstructing vision:
Xiongque Shi (Male Sparrow Droppings) mixed with human milk, ground, and applied. It will gradually decompose and rot, which is excellent. (Same as recorded in Zhouhou Fang and Qianjin Yi)
Another Eye Wash Decoction for Heat attacking the eyes causing obstruction and membranes:
Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex); Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 3 fen); Ruiren (Pruni Semen); Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 7 pieces); Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 5 pieces)
Chop the above eight ingredients. Boil in one sheng of water until reduced to six ge. Use to wash the eyes twice daily until cured. Avoid pork.
Qianjin Yi Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) for White Membranes Covering the Pupil and Loss of Vision:
Guangming Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 2 fen, ground); Beizi (Concha Meretricis, 5 pieces, burned to ash); Baiyu (Bookworms, 7 pieces, roasted); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, half fen)
Grind the above four ingredients into powder, mix and grind until fine. Sieve through熟 silk cloth three times. Lie supine while another person uses a fingernail to pick up a small amount and apply to the eye. Also treats white corneal opacities and wind-tearing. Avoid raw blood products.
Another Qibao San (Seven-Treasure Powder) for Chronic Eye Membranes:
Bai Zhenzhu (Nacre, 1 fen); Shanhu (Corallium Rubrum, 1 fen); Zi Bei (Concha Arcae, 1 fen); Ma Ke (Concha Tridacnae, 1 fen); Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 2 fen); Hupo (Amber, 1 fen); Ruiren (Pruni Semen, 2 fen); Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen, 1 fen); Shidan (Melanteritum, 1 fen)
Grind and sieve the above nine ingredients extremely finely. Apply to the eye like a mung bean size, three times daily. Excellent results. Avoid raw blood products. (All from Volume 11)
Cui Shi Formula for Membranes Unhealed for Fifty Years:
Beichi (Dentaria, 1 piece, calcined); Douchi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 30 pieces); Sannian Ku Jiu (Three-year-old Vinegar, 3 sheng)
Soak the calcined Beichi for three nights until dissolved. Add Douchi. Simmer gently until gelatinous. Take three ge of the medicine, place in a tube. At bedtime, instill an amount larger than a wheat grain into the eye. Wash with water the next morning. Cured in ten days.
Another formula for mild eye membranes:
Take equal parts of Gouqi Ye (Lycii Folium) and Cheqianzi Ye (Plantaginis Semen Leaf). Rub in hand until soft and juice exudes. Separately, wrap Sang Ye (Mori Folium) two or three layers thick, hang in a shady place overnight. Break the leaf to extract juice. Instill drop by drop into the eye. Within three to five applications, the membrane will rot and fall off.
Another formula for severe membranes:
Take Chu Bai Pi (Broussonetiae Cortex), dry in sun, roll into ropes as thick as a coarse hairpin. Burn to ash. When cool, apply ash to the membrane. Within three to five applications, the membrane will naturally rot and fall off. Provided by Zhang Yousi. (All from Volume 4)

Grind and sieve the above eleven ingredients. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wu zi (wu berry). Take 20 pills with water after meals, gradually increasing to 30 pills. Stop when cured. Avoid pork.
Xie Daoren Formula for Residual Eye Membranes:
Shanhu (Corallium Rubrum); Hupo (Amber); Yuxie (Jade fragments); Zengqing (Malachite); Zi Bei (Concha Arcae); Zhusha (Cinnabaris); Fu Ji Zi Qiao (Chicken Eggshell, remove inner membrane)
Take equal parts of the above seven ingredients. Grind and sieve repeatedly to make a powder. Lie supine and place a grain-sized amount on the membrane. Repeat four or five times. Avoid blood products.
