Etiology. Excessive labor injures the Kidney Qi (Kidney energy), causing the meridians to become deficient. Due to lying in dampness or exposure to wind, Wind-Dampness pathogens take advantage of this deficiency to attack the Kidneys. The Kidney meridian clashes with Qi and Blood, resulting in lower back pain. Hence, it is called Wind-Dampness lower back pain. (From Volume 5)
*Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Verified Prescriptions) Decoction of Radix Angelicae Pubescentis for treating Wind-Dampness invading the waist causing lower back pain:
Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo, 3 liang), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 6 liang), Dried Rehmanniae Radix (Gan Dihuang, 5 liang), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao, 4 liang), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng, 3 liang), Cinnamon Twig Heart (Guixin, 3 liang), Fructus Trichosanthis (Gualou, 3 liang), Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang, 2 liang, nodes removed), Rhizoma Bupleuri (Gan Ge, 3 liang).
The above ten ingredients are cut. Boil with 8 sheng of water and 2 sheng of wine until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. If not cured, prepare again. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao), raw Scallion (Cong), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai), and Xanthoceras sorbifolium seed (Wuyi).
(From Volume 5; this formula lacks Eucommia Bark [Duzhong], Aconite Root [Fuzi], and Apricot Seed [Xingren] compared to the previous formula.)
*Yan Nian Fang* (Longevity Prescriptions) Ironing method for treating lower back pain:
Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua, 2 sheng), Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua, 2 sheng), Daphne Genkwa (Yang Zhizhu, 2 sheng).
The above three ingredients are mixed with vinegar until moist, divided into two portions, placed in two cloth bags, and steamed. Steam for approximately the time it takes to cook one dou of rice. When warm, iron over clothing on the painful area. Replace when cold. The pain will subside once localized. (*Ji Yan Fang*, Fan Wang's version is identical, specifying mixing with wine instead.)
Another soybean ironing method for treating lower back pain:
Soybeans (Daydou, 6 sheng). Moisten with water, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth, and iron over a layer of clothing on the painful area until warmth penetrates deeply. Replace when cold. (From Zhang Wenzhong's collection)
Another prescription:
Wrap the painful area with yellow dog skin until warmth penetrates deeply and pain stops. (All from Volume 15)
Etiology: The Kidneys govern the waist and legs. Deficiency of the Kidney meridian allows Cold-Wind invasion. Accumulation of fluid occurs internally; Wind and Water clash, soaking the Kidneys. Kidney Qi becomes stagnant internally and cannot circulate freely.
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* (Record of Verification through Ages): Regarding "Shen Zhuo" (Kidney Fixation) disease: The patient feels heavy body weight, coldness from the waist downward, as if sitting in water. Although resembling edema, there is no thirst, urination is normal, and appetite/diet remain unchanged. This is the syndrome. It arises from sweating during labor, leaving clothes cold and damp inside, leading to the condition over time. There is cold pain below the waist, and abdominal heaviness as if wearing a belt of five thousand coins.
Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, 3 liang, processed), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 4 liang), Poria (Fuling, 4 liang).
The above four ingredients are cut. Boil with 5 sheng of water until 3 sheng remains. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times daily. The waist will become warm. Avoid Algae (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai), Peaches/Plums (Taoli), Sparrow Meat (Que Rou), and Vinegar products (Cu Wu). (From *Jing Xin Lu* formula). Dosage variation: Gancao 1 liang, Gan Jiang 2 liang, others same. (From Volume 27; named *Shen Zhuo Tang* in *Qian Jin Fang*)
*Jing Xin Lu* Powder of Shen Zhuo:
Cinnamon Twig Heart (Guixin, 3 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 4 liang), Poria (Fuling, 4 liang), Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 2 liang), Achyranthes Bidentata Root (Niuxi, 2 liang), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, 2 liang), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 3 liang).
The above eight ingredients are crushed and sifted into powder. Each dose consists of a square-inch spoonful (fang cun bi), boiled in 1 sheng of wine for five to six boils. Strain and take in one dose. Three times daily. Avoid raw Scallion (Cong), Peaches/Plums (Taoli), Sparrow Meat (Que Rou), Algae (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai), and Vinegar products (Cu Wu). (Same as *Qian Jin Fang*, from Volume 4)
