Apply soot from the bottom of a cooking pot (Baicaoshuang, soot from hundred herbs) mixed with vinegar to the upper and lower surfaces of the tongue. The more applied, the better the effect. Alternatively, take forty seeds of Ricinus communis (Bimazi, Castor Bean), press the oil out onto paper, and apply the oil-soaked paper to the tongue; the tongue will retract. If there is bleeding on the tongue, fumigating the nasal cavity will stop the bleeding spontaneously.
Gargle frequently with a mixture of sugar and vinegar. Alternatively, grind one qian of Bombyx batryticatus (Jiangcan, Stiff Silkworm) and two qian of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, Coptis Rhizome) that has been honey-fried into a fine powder, and apply it to the affected area. It is ideal if phlegm is expelled. One may also blow the powder of Bombyx batryticatus into the lesion.
Take Baicaoshuang (soot from hundred herbs) from a firewood stove, mix it with wine, and apply it under the tongue; it will heal immediately. Alternatively, grind Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao, Mirabilite) and Alumen (Baifan, Alum) into a fine powder and rub it on the lesion. Or use Natrii Sulfas (Puxiao, Mirabilite) and Vitriolum Viride (Lvfan, Green Vitriol).
For swollen tongue in children, grind Salt (Yan) and Baicaoshuang (soot from hundred herbs) into a fine powder, mix with well water, and apply externally.
The tongue suddenly swells and protrudes from the mouth for several inches. This is caused by extreme excess heat of the Heart. Take a small cup of blood from the comb of a rooster, immerse the protruding tongue in it, and the tongue will retract immediately.
Decoct five qian of Pteridii Spora (Puhuang, Lygodium Spore) to make a concentrated decoction, strain off the dregs, and hold it in the mouth several times; this is extremely effective. Alternatively, for severe swelling and pain approaching death, roast two qian of Ferri Sulfas (Zaofan, Iron Sulfate) on a tile, mix with vinegar, and apply externally.
In cases of Houfeng (Wind-Throat), where the tongue is swollen as large as a bladder, failure to rescue urgently leads to death. Use one fen of Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, Borneol), three fen of Natrii Nitras (Huoxiao, Sodium Nitrate), two fen of Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, Indigo), and five fen of Bombyx batryticatus (Jiangcan, Stiff Silkworm). Mix with fresh juice of Mentha haplocalyx (Bohe, Peppermint), white honey, and ginger juice, and apply to the area.
Place one bowl of aged vinegar and one liang of Trogopterori Faeces (Wulingzhi, Dung of Trogopterus) in a copper spoon. Boil until it boils three times. (When boiling, remove from fire immediately, stir with chopsticks until foam subsides, then heat again). After cooling, take a small amount and gargle frequently. When the mouth is full of saliva and foam, spit it out; do not swallow. Additionally, take four or five pods of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Ya Zaojiao, Chinese Honeylocust Pod) that are not worm-eaten, remove skin and seeds, roast until charred, and combine with two qian [of another ingredient implied or missing in text structure, but entity extraction focuses on listed items] to grind into a fine powder. Mix with rice vinegar and apply to the swollen area; the swelling will subside.
Grind Xirui Huang (Rhino Gallstone/Calculus Bovis substitute or specific compound, here likely referring to a specific preparation involving Calculus Bovis or similar, but text says Xi Huang which might be a typo for Xi Jiao or specific formula component, however "Xi Huang" usually refers to Calculus Bovis or a specific ancient term, let's stick to literal: Calculus Bovis or similar) and Cinnabaris (Zhusha, Cinnabar), each one fen, along with two liang of Yuanjingshi (Natrii Sulfas Precipitated or similar mineral, often associated with Natrii Sulfas or specific stone medicine), into a fine powder. Prick the tip of the tongue to release purple blood, then apply this medicine.
Apply Zhusha (Cinnabar) to the tongue. Alternatively, throw basins or bowls in the dark to create a sound of falling to the ground; the shock will cause the tongue to retract.
After a Shanghan (Cold Damage) febrile disease, if the tongue protrudes more than an inch and cannot retract, grind Meihua Bingpian (Plum Blossom Borneol) into a fine powder and sprinkle it on the tongue; it will retract upon contact. Five qian must be used to be effective.
If the tongue retreats to the corner of the mouth and trembles constantly, this is named Shefeng (Tongue Wind). Apply dried Tong (tongue, prepared by shade-drying) by poking/sticking it a few times on both forehead areas; it will heal immediately.
