- The treatment of carbuncle (Yong) and gangrene (Ju) follows two completely distinct paths. People in the world habitually refer to "carbuncle and gangrene" together and treat them as one, which is akin to referring to "husband and wife" together (implying they are fundamentally different entities). To use medicine for carbuncle to treat gangrene is like administering pregnancy-preserving herbs to a husband instead of his pregnant wife. This collection divides the treatment of carbuncle and gangrene into two separate pathways, both based on the method of identifying symptoms and prescribing formulas; if one follows these methods and prescribes according to symptoms, I dare not claim credit for saving lives; however, I shall bear sole responsibility for any harm caused. I am willing to suffer eternal damnation and be slaughtered by butchers.
- This *Collection* specifically discusses Yin deficiency and Yang excess, identifying red and white colors to determine whether it is a carbuncle or gangrene, upon which recovery can be achieved. All formulas recorded here are effective immediately upon administration; do not arbitrarily add or subtract ingredients, nor reduce dosages due to the high cost of certain herbs. The treatment methods for each symptom are clear at a glance upon opening the book; there is no need to seek a master, as anyone can master this art.
- Among other medical texts, only the discussion on Yin Gangrene attached to *Feng Shi Jin Nang* (Feng's Brocade Bag) aligns with my family's secret knowledge, yet it lacks formulas for resolving gangrene, relying solely on warming, tonifying, and supporting methods. Moreover, when gangrene first appears, the lesion is often flat and collapsed; how can a supporting method be used? Using support would cause further trouble. My family's method prioritizes resolution (dissipation) and fears support. Even in cases of flowing abscesses, scrofula, or malignant nodules, if ulceration has occurred, support is still contraindicated. If support is used, although the ulcerated area may heal, what about the newly emerging lesions? Therefore, resolution is prioritized.
- The deficiency and excess patterns in surgical diseases manifest externally. The treatment methods are detailed in this *Collection*, allowing one to save lives without needing to be proficient in pulse diagnosis. Thus, for conditions like smallpox (where danger, obstruction, smoothness, or reversal are observed), and eye diseases related to the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney, signs appear externally, so pulse diagnosis is also unnecessary. Diligent students can identify the disease by observing the color of the lesion and treat accordingly, ensuring recovery.
- Physicians hold the power over life and death. Reading commercially published surgical books that falsely claim orthodoxy, one finds statements like "if seven evils appear, death is certain." Another passage describes using a needle heated with tung oil and red clothing to pierce phlegm masses half an inch deep, inserting strips of descending medicines into the puncture wound; after seven days, the mass cracks open, and after another seven days of insertion, the nodule falls off. It also claims toxins lie within the skin and flesh, requiring incisions up to an inch deep, penetrating internal organs, asking how patients could endure such torture, leading to the immediate appearance of the "seven evils." Those who follow these methods are essentially executioners. This collection only uses pricking for ding-toxins (hard boils); otherwise, it generally avoids knives and needles and strictly prohibits the use of descending and pain-inducing/rotting medicines.
- Lesions all over the body present in only two colors: red and white. Red indicates carbuncle, white indicates gangrene; these are their names. Some call them "nameless swelling and toxicity" because they fail to recognize their Yin-Yang nature.
- Regardless of whether the lesion is on the back, neck, waist, or abdomen, white lesions are termed gangrene and cured with gangrene medicines; red and swollen lesions are termed carbuncles and cured with carbuncle medicines. Commercially printed books suggest trying one medicine, and if ineffective, switching to another. Is this not using humans as test subjects? If a lesion occurs at a critical acupoint, how can doctors afford to experiment! I hope those with superior insight will consider this carefully.
- There are no chronic, non-healing carbuncles in the world. Only gangrenes that failed to resolve initially, or were subjected to descending treatments, moxibustion, needling, or cutting, result in long-term non-healing. The formulas and drugs for treating these are detailed in this *Collection*.
- Wherever this *Collection* reaches, diligent students will naturally adopt its treatment methods. Initial stages are resolved, and chronic ulcers are healed. I fear that if this *Collection* arrives too late, physicians may not have seen it, and people may not have learned from it, leading to many errors. Therefore, I allow commercial reprinting to spread it rapidly throughout the land. May physicians possess the skill to save lives, and may there be no unjust deaths; this is my wish.
- The book records formulas for carbuncles, gangrenes, throat disorders, ding-toxins, chancres, various sores, hemorrhoids, and fistulas, all of which cure diseases upon administration. Miscellaneous conditions and additional diseases and formulas appended after clinical observations, which are also effective after a single dose, are included in this *Collection*. There is no error of testing medicines on humans here. I hope those with resources will prepare the medicines according to the formulas and deliver them promptly for the corresponding diseases; or simply take the cost of the herbs, or copy and transmit the formulas to others, noting the preparation and usage rules.
- The preparation and usage rules for all medicines in this book are extremely detailed and must not be ignored. One should carefully refine the medicines according to the rules to ensure purity and rapid efficacy.
- Typhoid fever (Shanghan) involves transmission through meridians, hence the saying that physicians should not stick rigidly to fixed formulas. However, surgical miscellaneous diseases rely entirely on identifying symptoms and adhering to specific formulas. At seventy-two years old, having treated diseases for over forty years, I have never made a mistake in medication. Thus, I dare to compile this *Collection* and make it public, naming it *Zheng Zhi Quan Sheng* (Complete Life Based on Symptom Treatment).
