The song states: Dingmu Huixiang Sanxiang Wan (Ding, Mu, and Huixiang Three-Aromatic Pill) consists of Clove Bud (Caryophylli Flos), Costus Root (Aucklandiae Radix), and Fennel Fruit (Foeniculi Fructus). It is combined with Amomum Fruit (Amomi Fructus), Perilla Leaf (Perillae Folium), and Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix). Atractylodes Rhizome (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Poria (Poria), Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are included, along with Dried Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Alisma Tuber (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma). Also included are Polyporus (Polyporus), Akebia Stem (Akebiae Caulis), and Koelreuteria Seed (Koelreuteriae Semen). Angelica Dahurica Root (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) is powdered, and the mixture is formed into pills using wheat paste. For all conditions caused by cold, deficiency, and critical states where food intake is poor, its efficacy is miraculous as if from a fairy.
(Prescription) Clove Bud (2 qian), Costus Root (3 qian), Fennel Fruit (7 qian), Amomum Fruit (5 qian), Perilla Leaf (7 qian), Scutellaria Root (1 qian), Poria (3 qian), Polyporus (1 qian), Atractylodes Rhizome (3 qian), Tangerine Peel (3 qian), Dried Ginger (1 qian), Alisma Tuber (1 qian), Cyperus Rhizome (2 qian), Akebia Stem (1 qian), Koelreuteria Seed (5 pieces), Angelica Dahurica Root (3 qian).
(Preparation) Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using wheat paste, sized like mung beans.
(Usage) Take 3 qian per dose, taken on an empty stomach with ginger decoction. If the patient has weak constitution and poor appetite, and experiences side effects such as vomiting and abdominal pain after taking Zhongjiu Wan (Central Nine Pill), immediately take 3 qian of this pill to resolve the symptoms.
This formula is specifically effective for treating all critical conditions caused by cold phlegm. If the patient has a weak constitution and poor gastric appetite, and develops nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea after taking Zhongjiu Wan, adding 3 qian of this pill to be taken simultaneously can eliminate these adverse reactions. The composition of this formula is indeed somewhat complex (slightly different from Muxiang Liqi Yin [Costus Qi-Regulating Decoction]). If vomiting occurs after taking Zhongjiu Wan, one may also use Stir-fried Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus) and White Cardamom Seed (Cardamomi Semens Album), added to Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Six-Gentlemen Decoction), which yields efficacy equivalent to that of this formula.
The song states: Huarou Linggao (Meat-Dissolving Spirit Ointment) has boundless wonders. Mulberry Branch Ash, Hemp Stem Ash, and Calcined Alum are used in equal amounts. Chinese Silvervine Root (Sinopodophylli Radix), Sichuan Aconite Root (Aconiti Radix Carnea), and Grass Aconite Root (Aconiti Radix) are decocted together in water. The liquid is poured over the ash to observe the separation. Although five types of ash are used similarly, the modifications yield more divine efficacy.
(Prescription) Mulberry Branch Ash (5 sheng), Hemp Stem Ash (5 sheng), Guang Calcined Alum (5 sheng, unfermented).
(Preparation) Mix the three ashes together for later use. Separately, take 1 liang of Chinese Silvervine Root, 4 liang of Sichuan Aconite Root, 1 liang of Grass Aconite Root, 1 liang of Wild Taro Tuber (Arisaema Cum Baccis), 1 liang of Raw Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma Crude), and 5 qian of Croton Seed (Crotonis Semen). Cut them into slices and decoct into a concentrated liquid. Place the aforementioned ashes in a bamboo sieve (lined with rice straw at the bottom). Pour the medicinal liquid over the ashes. Collect the filtered water in a vessel (the filtered water is ideal if it feels like needle pricks when touched to the tongue), approximately one large bowl. Simmer slowly in a pot until concentrated to an appropriate degree. Then add 1 liang of Alum (Alumen) to form the ointment. Store in a bottle and seal with yellow beeswax for later use.
(Usage) When needed, take out the ointment, grind it finely into a mud-like consistency. Apply a small amount to the center of the sore. The medicinal power will naturally spread to the surrounding areas, achieving the effect of dissolving necrotic tissue and disinfecting. If pain is felt, uncover to check. If red line-like structures appear around the affected area, spit a mouthful of cold water onto it, and the pain will stop immediately. If the necrotic tissue has been removed and new muscle growth is desired, mix a small amount of this ointment with water to a light tea color. Use a new brush dipped in water to wash the sore surface, which will gradually promote muscle regeneration and wound closure. This ointment has strong corrosive power, causing exceptional pain after use, as its action is chemically similar to "light Potassium Hydroxide". Modern pharmaceuticals include similar substances such as Copper Sulfate, Silver Nitrate, and Carbolic Acid, which possess identical corrosive properties. If self-preparation is troublesome, it is acceptable to substitute these chemical agents. Shuishui Yuanzhu contains a formula called "Hualiu Gao" (Tumor-Dissolving Ointment, i.e., Five-Ash Ointment). Although its prescription differs slightly from this formula, its function is exactly the same. It is excerpted here: Mulberry Wood Ash, Jujube Wood Ash, Tung Shell Ash, and Wheat Ash, each 2.5 sheng, mixed together and placed in a bamboo sieve lined with rice straw. Pour liquid until about five bowls are obtained. Add 40 Blister Beetle (Mylabris), 5 slices of Pangolin Scale (Manis Squama), 5 qian of Frankincense (Olibanum), and 1 qian of Borneol (Borneolum Syntheticum). Decoct in water to make one bowl, and store in porcelain. When using, mix with fresh calcined alum to form a paste for application. Keep moist with clear water when dry. The function of "Huarou Gao" is specifically to chase and erode necrotic tissue from malignant sores. However, its nature is considered too violent. It is far inferior to the "Zhentou San" (Needle-Head Powder) from Xue Ji's *Waike Jingyi* (Essentials of Surgery) and the "Tuolan San" (Slough-Removing Powder) from *Xian Nian Ji*, which are more gentle and orthodox. Therefore, I suggest that it would be more satisfactory to directly substitute one of those two formulas instead.
