(Also known as Guo Dan)
(Formula) Wobian (Lead, San Qian), Zhangdan (Minium, Er Liang)
(Method of Preparation): (1) Place lead into a silver-melting pot (i.e., a refractory clay pot commonly used in the past for melting silver), and melt it over fire.
(2) Slowly sprinkle Zhangdan onto the melted lead. Utilize the heavy lead vapor to fumigate, and stir a depression in the center of the minium. Wait until the depression turns black and the surrounding area appears yellow; this indicates the correct degree of processing (approximately one incense stick's time is sufficient for thorough steaming). After cooling, remove the lead and collect the cinnabar/minium product. This is Jin Dan, also known as "Guo Dan".
(Formula) Bai Pi (Realgar/White Arsenic, Er Liang), Liu Huang (Sulfur, Si Liang)
(Method of Preparation) (1) Grind arsenic and sulfur together into a fine powder, put them into a silver-melting pot, cover with an iron plate, secure tightly with iron wire, and seal the entire pot with salt mud (or gypsum mixed with vinegar may be used). Wait until dry for use.
(2) Place the dried pot in charcoal fire. Estimate that the medicine inside has melted (approximately three incense sticks' time), then remove it and let it cool. Peel off the mud shell and lift the iron plate (handle gently to prevent the sublimated medicine on the lid from falling back down). The substance sublimating onto the lid and resembling yellow buds is Yan Liu (Volatile Sulfur); the substance settling at the bottom of the pot and appearing dark green is Shi Qing (Green Orpiment). Take out this dark green substance, grind it into a fine powder, and set aside for use. Although these two substances originate from the same source, their properties are截然 different: Yan Liu is toxic, whereas Shi Qing is non-toxic.
(Formula) Wen Yin (Refined Silver, Yi Liang), Shi Qing (Green Orpiment, approximately Yi Liang)
(Method of Preparation) (1) Hammer silver into thin sheets, cut into small pieces, put them into a silver-melting pot, and melt over fire.
(2) Take approximately six or seven Qian of Shi Qing powder, add it to the melted silver, and stir with iron chopsticks. The silver will naturally expand/bloom. If it does not expand sufficiently, add another three or four Qian of Shi Qing powder; it will surely expand. The amount of Shi Qing used is not fixed; the standard is always that the silver quality is fully expanded/permeated.
(3) Take out the fully expanded silver, crush it, grind into a fine powder, and remove ash/residue. Its color resembles indigo flowers (emerald green), hence named Yin Cui. Soak it in cold water, changing the water twice daily. After seven days and nights, the fire toxicity will be completely eliminated. Store for future use.
In Gu Shicheng's *Yangyi Daquan* (Comprehensive Collection for Surgeons), under the section on Hemorrhoids and Fistulas, there is a formula called Tui Guan Fang (Tube-Expelling Formula), which is extremely similar to Yin Cui, differing only in preparation method. It is recorded below for reference:
(Jia) Ci Shi (Magnetite, Liu Liang)
Crush to the size of beans, soak in Biji (Bletilla striata) water for several days, take out, coat with Liu Huang (Sulfur) powder, put into a pot and sublimate for three hours, yielding approximately three Qian of Dan.
(Yi) Chen Sha (Cinnabar, Si Liang), Ming Fan (Alum, Si Liang) (Sublimate separately into Dan)
(Bing) Wen Yin (Refined Silver, Yi Liang), Liu Huang (Sulfur, San Qian), Bai Pi (White Arsenic, San Fen) (Refine into powder)
Weigh equal parts of the above three powdered medicines, mix evenly, form pills using rice paste, sized like millet grains. Take one Fen per dose, washed down with Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) decoction. Approximately half a day after ingestion, swelling and pain will be felt in the lower part. Pat the left and right buttocks with hands, and the tube will spontaneously expel. When expulsion is complete, use flesh-regenerating medicine to conclude treatment. For small tube openings, first use a caustic medicine to rot/open the opening, making the tube easier to expel; for those desiring rapid expulsion, wash with a decoction of Ricinus communis seeds.
