Two moxibustion needles are required, and they must be identical. The needle should be as thick as a chopstick, with a rounded head and a length of seven cun. When used, it is dipped in sesame oil and heated red-hot over charcoal fire. It is inserted obliquely towards the soft area of the lesion for cauterization, which yields good results. If one application does not penetrate thoroughly, it should be repeated until pus and fluid flow out naturally, indicating the patient's recovery. Subsequently, a paper twist is inserted into the cauterized opening, and an external plaster is applied; this was highly regarded in ancient times. This method is rarely used nowadays, primarily due to fear of causing panic or distress to the patient. Currently, Yangsui Ding (Yang Fire Tablet) is mostly used to replace hot needles for cauterization, which is indeed a remarkable prescription.
[Note] For carbuncles, ulcers, or flowing nodules that persist without resolving, and where internal ulceration occurs without pain, hot needle cauterization is appropriate. The two needles must be identical, shaped like chopsticks in thickness, with rounded heads and a length of seven cun. During use, dip them in sesame oil and heat them red-hot over charcoal. Insert them obliquely near the head of the sore towards the softer tissue. If one insertion is insufficient, repeat it until pus flows out spontaneously without manual pressure. Then, take cotton paper twisted into a rope-like shape and insert it into the cauterized tract according to its depth. Spread the remaining paper apart and apply an external plaster. This is the ancient method, now seldom used, likely because patients are afraid of being startled. Therefore, Yangsui Ding is used as a substitute.
Yangsui Ding (Yang Fire Tablet):
Chan Su (Toad Venom, powdered), Zhusha (Cinnabar, powdered), Chuan Wu (Aconitum carmichaelii Debx., powdered), Cao Wu (Aconitum kusnezoffii Reichb., powdered, each 5 fen), Zhi Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus, powdered, 1 piece).
Mix the above ingredients evenly. Place Liu Huang (Sulfur, 1 liang 5 qian) in a spoon and melt it over low heat. Next, add the powdered Chan Su and other ingredients, stirring well. Then add Dang Men Zi She Xiang (Moschus, 2 fen) and Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 1 fen), and stir evenly. Immediately pour the mixture into a wet porcelain dish, swirling quickly to form sheets. Once cooled, remove and store in a porcelain jar.
For use, take a piece the size of a sweet melon seed, with a pointed top and flat bottom. First, rub the area to be moxaed with red date flesh, then attach the medicated tablet. Light the tablet using a rush pith dipped in oil. Perform moxibustion for five, seven, or nine moxa cones (zhuang). After completion, immediately drink half a wine cup of rice vinegar. Wait for small blisters to appear, puncture them with a thread needle, allow a little yellow fluid to drain, and apply Wanying Gao (All-Effect Plaster); the toxicity will dissipate. For wind-dampness pain, press with a chopstick along bone gaps, mark the sore spot with ink, and perform moxibustion. Additionally, for all sores in their initial stage, perform three to five moxa cones on the swollen area, leading to immediate recovery.
[Preset Verse] Yangsui Ding treats cold-type swelling and sores via moxibustion, composed of Cinnabar, Aconitum species, Bombyx Batryticatus, and Sulfur. Refined by fire with Toad Venom, Borneol, and Musk, poured hot into sheets for excellent efficacy.
