(For women's diseases, refer to *Furen Liangfang* and *Fuke Cuoyao*.)
The breasts belong to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and the nipples belong to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. In men, excessive sexual activity or anger injures the Liver and Kidney. In women, childbirth and melancholy injure the Liver; the primary treatment is Tuoli San (Support-the-Interior Powder). If the sore does not heal or the pus is thin and clear, the focus should be on tonifying the Spleen and Stomach. If pain persists after pus discharge, or if chills and fever occur, this indicates Qi and Blood deficiency; use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Great Tonifying Decoction). Fatigue and dry mouth indicate Middle Qi deficiency; use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Afternoon tidal fever and internal heat indicate Yin Blood deficiency; use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) with added Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit). Nausea or vomiting indicates Stomach Qi deficiency; use Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction). Poor appetite with vomiting indicates Stomach Qi deficiency and Cold; add Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb) to the previous formula. Poor appetite with diarrhea indicates Spleen Qi deficiency and Cold; add Paogjiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome) to the previous formula. If swelling and pain result from overwork, it indicates that Qi and Blood have not yet recovered; use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction), doubling the dosage of Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuling (Poria), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizome). If swelling and pain result from anger, it indicates Liver Fire injuring Blood; use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) with added Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). If nodules (Jiehe) arise from Liver Fire and Blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizome). If nodules arise from Liver and Spleen Qi and Blood deficiency, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with added Xiongqiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizome). If nodules arise from emotional constraint injuring the Spleen, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) combined with Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder). If nodules arise from emotional constraint and anger injuring the Liver and Spleen, presenting with no itching or pain, they are called Ru Yan (Breast Rock/Cancer), which is extremely difficult to treat. However, if one can restrain the Seven Emotions, avoid rich and greasy foods, resolve emotional constraints, and nourish Qi and Blood, life can be preserved.
Case Records:
Lord Yuan Yangjing had a nodule in his left breast that became red and swollen after more than a month. This was caused by deficiency of the Three Foot-Yin meridians combined with anger. He was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex), after which all symptoms gradually subsided; he was then cured with Qingjie Jieyu Tang (Clear the Liver and Resolve Constraint Decoction). It was mid-autumn, and his eyes were twitching continuously; his Liver pulse was slightly wiry, indicating abundant Liver Fire stirring Wind. An additional 5 fen of Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) was added, and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) was administered, resulting in a cure. Had清热 (Heat-clearing) and Duji (Toxin-resolving) methods been used, along with phlegm-resolving and Qi-moving agents, errors would rarely have been avoided.
A scholar suffered from swelling in both breasts. After taking Liaoqiao Yin (Forsythia Drink), the swelling became hard, accompanied by poor appetite, internal heat, chest and hypochondriac pain, afternoon headache, and dark, scanty urination. This indicated deficiency of the Three Foot-Yin meridians combined with emotional constraint; the previous medicines had further damaged the Spleen and Lungs. Initially, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was used with added Xiongqiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). After more than forty doses, his Original Qi recovered, and the abscess spontaneously ruptured. Subsequently, pain and aversion to cold appeared, indicating Qi and Blood deficiency; he was cured using Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Great Tonifying Decoction) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).
Another scholar suffered from pain in both breasts and distension in both hypochondria. Having long taken Liuqi Yin (Flowing Qi Drink) and Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder), a lump formed under his left hypochondrium with unchanged skin color. He experienced chills and fever upon exertion. He was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Zhebeimu (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix). After more than a month, the area turned red and painful, indicating impending suppuration. Puncture released about a bowl of pus, followed immediately by severe vomiting, indicating Stomach Qi deficiency with Phlegm. He was instructed to chew fresh ginger frequently and take Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction); once vomiting ceased, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) was added, leading to healing. Later, when entering official service, every instance of exertion or anger caused chest and breast pain, sometimes with chills and fever. Taking Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with fried Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) resulted in recovery.
