Treats xuan yong (perineal abscess) with swelling and pain, or accompanied by chills and fever. It is highly effective regardless of whether the lesion is swollen or ulcerated. The method is as follows: Take one liang of large licorice root (Gancao, 甘草), cut into segments about three cun long, soak in one bowl of spring water, and dry over slow fire. Then return it to the same water to soak thoroughly, repeating the process of soaking and drying until the water in the bowl is completely evaporated. Grind into fine powder. Decoct in one bowl of pure wine (without ash) until reduced to seventy percent, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
