If food intake doubles, the Spleen and Stomach will be injured. Consequently, Stomach Qi cannot circulate properly, and Spleen Qi cannot distribute to the four directions. Thus, dampness flows downward, taking advantage of the deficiency of the Liver and Kidney, leading to swelling. Additionally, if sexual activity is not regulated, causing Yang deficiency and Yin excess, Hongjiao (foot swelling disease) ensues. There are also cases where internal injury from diet causes a deficit in Spleen and Stomach Qi; since clear Qi cannot ascend, it sinks downward, resulting in Hongjiao. In such cases, it is appropriate to use Dongyuan's Kaie Daoyin Wan (Kaijie Daoyin Pill) to open blockages and guide the mechanism, assisting in the transformation of Spleen dampness. If Spleen Qi is deficient and dampness is stagnant and obstructed, causing facial or ocular edema or pain, it is appropriate to use Daozhi Tongjing Tang (Daozhi Tongjing Decoction) for dredging and unblocking.
Although Hongjiao arises from Kidney deficiency, women may also suffer from this condition due to the emptiness of the Blood Sea (Chong and Ren meridians) combined with emotional disturbances (Seven Emotions), thereby developing this disease. Currently, many women suffer from this, indicating that women contract it due to Blood Sea deficiency, which is similar to men contracting it due to Kidney deficiency. The medication for men and women is the same without difference; furthermore, one should simultaneously treat the emotional factors involved, and there will be no ineffectiveness.
Although Hongjiao is said to have varying depths of swelling and degrees of pathogenic invasion, the root cause in all cases is the weakness of True Qi, allowing pathogenic factors to invade deeply. If True Qi were robust, how could pathogenic factors cause harm? Therefore, Fugu Ju (Bone-attached abscess) and Hexi Feng (Crane-knee wind) are conditions frequently suffered by those with Kidney deficiency. Ancients used Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata) because it warms and tonifies Kidney Qi, promotes the movement of medicinal potency, and disperses cold pathogens.
Whenever there is damp-phlegm, damp-heat, or dead blood stagnating and flowing into joints, unless one uses acrid-warm formulas to open the Couli (skin pores and interstices) and unblock the collaterals, allowing Qi to move and Blood to harmonize, how can the disease be cured? However, people say Fuzi is toxic and are reluctant to take it. If processed with child's urine (Tongbian), what toxicity remains? Moreover, it is not taken frequently, so why worry? I had insufficient Middle Qi and took Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Boost Qi Decoction) with added Fuzi for three years; where did I see any toxicity? The Classics state: "Use the appropriate medicine for the specific disease." Therefore, Dafangfeng Tang (Da Fangfeng Decoction) and Huoluo Dan (Huoluo Pill) are often effective in treating Hongjiao and Hexi Feng.
Huoluo Dan: For diseases deeply entrenched within, no other medicine can penetrate as effectively as this one. However, in recent times, some claim this drug draws wind into the bones, like oil penetrating flour, which is why later generations are often reluctant to take it.
Generally speaking, one should use the appropriate medicine for the disease; how can one adhere rigidly to such doubts, thereby making the disease difficult to cure?
