Edema is caused by the failure of Earth (Spleen) to control Water (Kidney). The prescription is as follows:
*Qian Niu Zi* (Pharbitidis Semen, 3 qian) *Gan Sui* (Kansui Radix, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Although there are many treatment methods for this condition, this prescription is particularly miraculous; secondly, *Ji Shi Li* (Chicken Dropping Wine) is also effective, and it is especially effective for treating Blood Distension (Xue Gu). One theory states that in the former prescription, *Qian Niu Zi* and *Gan Sui* should each be used in the amount of 3 qian.
This condition arises from Water Qi invading the Pericardium Collateral (Xin Bao Luo). When the Pericardium is oppressed by Water Qi, hiccups persist incessantly. The intent is to summon the Qi of the Five Zang Organs to rescue the Heart from the invasion of Water Qi. The method should involve promoting diuresis and separating dampness, after which the hiccups will naturally cease. The prescription used is *Zhi E Tang* (Hiccup-Stopping Decoction):
*Fu Shen* (Poria with Hostwood, 1 liang) *Cang Zhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian) *Bai Zhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian) *Yi Ren* (Coicis Semen, 1 liang) *Qian Shi* (Euryales Semen, 5 qian) *Ban Xia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed, 1 qian) *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
After one dose, the hiccups stop; after two doses, they are cured.
The symptoms include protruding eyes, open mouth, swollen feet, and panting breath. People consider this an incurable condition, but they do not know that the Bladder and Kidney have a interior-exterior relationship. The opening and closing of the Bladder are governed by the Kidney. By specifically unblocking Kidney Qi, the Bladder will naturally become unblocked. The prescription used is *Tong Shen Xiao Shui Tang* (Kidney-Unblocking and Water-Reducing Decoction):
*Shu Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 1 liang) *Shan Yu Rou* (Corni Fructus, 1.5 qian) *Che Qian Zi* (Plantaginis Semen, 3 qian) *Rou Gui* (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian) *Niu Xi* (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 1 qian) *Shan Yao* (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang) *Yi Ren* (Coicis Semen, 1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally.
External dampness is easy to treat, whereas internal dampness is difficult to cure. For external dampness, promoting diuresis leads to recovery. If it is internal injury, purging water depletes Qi, and inducing sweating leaks Essence. Therefore, strengthening the Spleen and promoting Qi movement must be performed first. [Prescription used]:
*Bai Zhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang) *Fu Ling* (Poria, 1 liang) *Yi Ren* (Coicis Semen, 1 liang) *Yin Chen* (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 3 qian) *Hei Zhi Zi* (Gardeniae Fructus, charred, 3 qian) *Chen Pi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 qian).
This is a prescription for treating internal injury. If multiple doses are desired, remove *Zhi Zi*.
For those unable to get out of bed, already rendered invalid, it is because excessive Fire blazes internally, boiling dry the Kidney Water. The treatment method is to descend Stomach Fire and tonify Kidney Water. The prescription used is *Jiang Bu Dan* (Descending and Tonifying Pill):
*Shu Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 1 liang) *Yuan Shen* (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang) *Mai Dong* (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 1 liang) *Gan Ju Hua* (Chrysanthemi Flos, 5 qian) *Che Qian Zi* (Plantaginis Semen, 2 qian) *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix, 5 qian).
There are also cases of weakness in both legs, inability to stand up, yet with a good appetite and ability to eat. If slightly hungry, heat appears on the head, face, and back, accompanied by incessant coughing. This is also Wei Syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome). The prescription [used] is:
*Shu Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 1 liang) *Yuan Shen* (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang) *Shan Yao* (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang) *Gan Ju Hua* (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1 liang) *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian) *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix)...
