When a person suffers from overexertion, the pulse will inevitably be floating and large without regularity. If one does not maintain a restful lifestyle, symptoms of hematemesis (vomiting blood) will certainly arise. In such cases, tonification should be employed using the following prescription:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 liang), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 5 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 4 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 8 liang), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, ...). These are ground into fine powder and formed into pills with refined honey. Take 5 qian each morning and evening.
If the condition worsens during the day, accompanied by chills and fever, which are more severe than at night, this type of syndrome must be intercepted before dawn. The prescription is as follows:
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Huang [Qin] (Scutellariae Radix or Astragali Radix, missing character in text, 5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 qian).
[Change the prescription.] The new prescription is:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Brassicae Seminium, 1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, ...).
If the condition worsens at night, presenting with chills and fever, where there is less cold and more heat, or less heat and more cold, feeling refreshed upon dawn, but worsening towards dusk...
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Shan Yu (Corni Fructus, 4 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 qian), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 3 qian, raw), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, ...), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, ...).
The brilliance of this formula lies in the use of Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), which governs Yin. It enters when encountering Yin and transforms when encountering Yang; Raw He Shou Wu directly enters the Yin meridians to attack pathogenic factors; Bai Jie Zi eliminates phlegm without consuming True Yin Qi. How could it fail to achieve efficacy? It must be taken at dusk, so that the Yin Qi becomes consolidated...
However, there are also cases where Yin pathogens are combined with Yang pathogens, occurring at night, presenting with chills and fever, indistinguishable from pure Yin pathogen syndromes, except for slight irritability.
The prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Shan Yu (Corni Fructus, 4 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 5 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Brassicae Seminium, 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, ...), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 3 qian), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 3 qian...).
