The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) each has its respective connections. The Upper Jiao is named "San Guan Fan She" (Three Tubes Reflection), the Middle Jiao is named "Huo Luan" (Cholera-like disorder), and the Lower Jiao is named "Zou Bu" (Running Food). Together they form one entity, having a name but no substantial form.
The Upper Jiao is located at the upper opening of the Stomach, connects with the Pharynx, passes upward through the Diaphragm, spreads in the Chest and moves toward the Axillae, following the distribution of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. It primarily governs the emergence of Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) to nourish the Skin and Muscle Intervals.
To treat Upper Jiao deficiency-cold with Qi stagnation, presenting as chest and diaphragm obstruction and stuffiness, significantly reduced food intake, or occasional phlegm-reversal, use He Li Le San (Terminalia Chebula Powder).
Ingredients: Pi of He Li Le (Terminalia chebula Retz.) (1 liang), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria) (3 fen), Chen Ju Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (3 fen, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) (0.5 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (remove Lu Tou/Awn head), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem) (as per context, likely Akebiae Caulis).
Process the above ingredients by pounding and sieving into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200-300ml) of water and 0.5 fen of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome). Decoct until 0.5 zhong zhan remains. Strain off the dregs. Take warm after meals.
To treat Upper Jiao deficiency-cold with Qi congestion, attacking and causing headache, and disharmony in the chest and diaphragm, use Da Fu Pi San (Areca Peel Powder).
Ingredients: Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel) (3 fen, chopped), Bing Lang (Areca Seed) (3 fen), Mu Xiang (Costus Root) (0.5 liang), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria) (1 liang), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (0.5 liang), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (0.5 liang, washed in decoction), Xiong (likely Chuan Xiong/Sichuan Lovage Rhizome).
Process the above ingredients by pounding and sieving into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 0.5 fen of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome). Decoct until 0.5 zhong zhan remains. Strain off the dregs. Take warm at any time.
To treat Upper Jiao deficiency-cold, resulting in spirit failing to reside, loose stools, and inability to speak, use Bai Fu Ling San (White Poria Powder).
Ingredients: Bai Fu Ling (White Poria) (2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2.5 liang, remove Lu Tou/Awn head), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) (1 liang, processed until cracked and chopped), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (1 liang), Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root) (1 liang).
To treat Upper Jiao deficiency-cold, resulting in shortness of breath in the chest/diaphragm and inability to eat, use Huang Qi San (Astragalus Powder).
Ingredients: Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (2 liang), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (1 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang, remove Lu Tou/Awn head), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) (1 liang, remove Lu Tou/Awn head), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome) (1 liang, processed until cracked and chopped), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) (soaked, skin and seeds removed), Shuang Ren (Double Kernels, likely Apricot Kernels).
To treat Upper Jiao deficiency-cold, resulting in shortness of breath with interrupted breathing, aversion and stuffiness in the diaphragm, where food is vomited first then digested downward, it is suitable to take Ban Xia San (Pinellia Powder) which regulates the middle, unblocks the diaphragm, and breaks cold.
Ingredients: Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) (1 liang, washed seven times in decoction to remove slipperiness), Ma Huang (Ephedra Herb) (1 liang, remove root joints), Xi Xin (Asarum Root) (1 liang), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) (2 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel).
Process the above ingredients by pounding and sieving into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 0.5 fen of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome). Decoct until 0.5 zhong zhan remains. Strain off the dregs. Take warm at any time.
