The Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) is located below the umbilicus, at the upper opening of the Bladder. It is responsible for separating the clear from the turbid and serves as the fu-organ of conduction and transformation, functioning like a ditch releasing water into a pool. It originates from the lower orifice of the Stomach.
For deficiency-cold of the Lower Jiao manifesting as abdominal pain, rebellious Qi, and inability to eat, use Fuzi San (Aconite Powder).
Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 1 liang, processed until cracked, skin and hilum removed) Ganjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 fen, processed until cracked, chopped) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 liang) Qingjupi (Green Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, roasted until slightly red and chopped)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 0.5 ban of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to 0.5 fen volume. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach.
For deficiency-cold of the Lower Jiao manifesting as unremitting lower abdominal pain and shortness of breath as if about to cease, use Xuqi Renshen San (Ren Shen Powder for Continuation of Qi).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, radix removed) Chenjupi (Dried Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried) Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang) Wumei Rou (Semen Pruni Mume, 1 liang, lightly stir-fried) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 liang, heart removed) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 liang, bark removed, processed with ginger juice)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 da zhan of water and 0.5 ban of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to 0.5 fen volume. Strain and take warm at any time.
For deficiency-cold of the Lower Jiao manifesting as stasis in the abdomen causing forgetfulness, aversion to human voices, chest oppression, and shortness of breath, use Fuling Wan (Poria Pill).
Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-roasted until slightly red and chopped) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang, radix removed) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 1 liang, soaked in decoction, skin and tip removed, bran-roasted until slightly yellow) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, 1 liang, soaked in water, pulp removed, bran-roasted until slightly yellow)
Sieve the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with gruel beverage, three times daily.
For deficiency-cold of the Lower Jiao manifesting as bleeding preceding stool changes, termed "proximal blood"; or with or without diarrhea, use Fulonggan San (Dragon's House Soil Powder).
Fulonggan (Hearth Earth, 2 liang) Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-roasted until slightly red and chopped) Ganjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang, processed until cracked and chopped) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 2 liang, sprouts removed) Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 2 liang, soaked in wine overnight, dried, ground into powder)

For deficiency-cold of the Lower Jiao manifesting as stool preceding bleeding, termed "distal blood"; or with or without diarrhea, occurring due to fatigue and cold exposure, use Xuduan San (Dipsacus Powder).
Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix, 2 liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang, chopped and lightly stir-fried) Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, honey-roasted until slightly red and chopped) Ganjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang, processed until cracked and chopped) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 liang)
