The way to nurture human beings is none other than raising the young to achieve adulthood. Without nurturing the young, one cannot eventually become an adult. Thus, the *I Ching* (Book of Changes) states that accumulating small things leads to greatness, and the *Shi Jing* (Classic of Poetry) says "At the beginning, when people were born."
Whenever a newborn infant is delivered from the womb, immediately wrap a finger in cotton wool and wipe the blue-black vernix caseosa and lochia from the mouth and tongue. This is called "Yu Xian" (Jade Holding). If not wiped promptly... [text fragment] ...the crying sound...
Whenever an infant is born and does not make a sound upon touching the ground, take a vessel of cold water and pour it into the mouth. After a short while, the infant should cry naturally. Alternatively, gently whip the body with white parts of green onions, and the infant will cry.
Whenever an infant is first born, they should be lifted up immediately. If lifting is delayed, cold pathogen may enter the abdomen, causing borborygmus (rumbling in the intestines). Furthermore, bathe the infant first, then quickly cut the umbilical cord. Do not... [text fragment] ...if... umbilicus...
It is said that the bluish-green color of stool indicates coldness, similar to contracting water-cold. This should cause abdominal pain, loud crying, and a cyanotic-black complexion. This is due to contracting water-cold and requires moxibustion.
Also, when an infant is first born, wrap them in the father's old clothes; if it is a girl, wrap them in the mother's old clothes. Do not use new silk or gauze garments. Strictly follow this method to ensure the infant's longevity.

Whenever a newborn infant's muscles are not yet formed, do not dress them in warm clothing. Warm clothing causes tendons and bones to become lax and weak. It is suitable to expose them to wind and sunlight from time to time. If they never see wind or sunlight, then... Whenever the infant cannot accept milk or food, purgative methods should be used. In this way, fever and chills will ultimately not occur.
Furthermore, a newborn infant's vital qi is still robust. If slight discomfort is perceived, purgative methods must be used. Do not worry about deficiency caused by purging; once the illness is cured, it brings profound benefit. If not... therefore should... those... self... fever and chills... infant... therefore... pillow... only...
Mindful regulation, increase the number of moxa cones, up to thirty burns. Only the Fengchi (GB20) acupoint requires special attention for more burns. For children over seven years old, up to one hundred burns can be applied. Children must always carefully protect the Fengchi acupoint. The proverb says: "Or raise children by protecting Fengchi." It is located on the sides of the tendons in the neck. Treat it only when there is illness. After Start of Summer, be cautious of illnesses; do not practice acupuncture and moxibustion recklessly, nor induce vomiting or purging arbitrarily. The reason is that acupuncture and moxibustion damage meridians and collaterals, while vomiting and purging disturb the zang-fu organs. One should only bathe the child with heat-clearing decoctions, apply heat-clearing powder, massage with red heat-clearing ointment, and apply navel ointment to the umbilicus. Keep the child in a cool place, do not forbid drinking water, and frequently feed them fresh water. For healthy newborns, absolutely avoid reckless acupuncture and moxibustion. Reckless acupuncture and moxibustion cause the infant to endure pain and disturb the five pulses, predisposing them to epilepsy. The Heluo region has cold land, so infants often suffer from cold diseases. The local custom is to moxibusture the cheeks three days after birth to prevent trismus (lockjaw). If trismus occurs, the veins on the tongue are tense, and the jaw is rigid. The customs of these regions involve cutting the tongue to release blood and moxibusting the cheeks to prevent trismus deviation. The Shu region is warm and does not have this disease. Since ancient prescriptions have been transmitted, this acupuncture and moxibustion method makes people unaware of the differences between north and south. If one simply follows the prescription, it often harms infants. Therefore, rural children, left to nature, all avoid such premature death. It is also said: In spring and summer, there is definitely no need to purge infants; let them be natural. The reason is that infants' zang-fu qi is weak, prone to both deficiency and excess. Purging inevitably causes deficiency, leading to heat in the upper jiao. Heat increases phlegm, and phlegm becomes disease. Unless strictly necessary for treating illness, purging should not be used.
When an infant is first born and leaves the womb, flesh and bone are not yet consolidated, and muscles are still in a state of blood. When blood coagulates, it hardens to form muscles. If blood stagnates and deteriorates, failing to form muscles, then... [text fragment] ...is...
Whenever an infant is first born, do not use warm clothing. Warm clothing damages skin and muscles, harms blood vessels, induces various sores, and causes jaundice.
Within the first year of an infant's life, clothing made for the infant must use old cotton wadding and old silk. Do not cover the head and face with cotton clothing. In winter, one can... padded garments... let the infant...

In spring and summer, they inevitably drink stagnant cold water and cold substances. By early autumn, all fall ill... juice and stool... mouth... back... thereby making... none...
