After the resolution of cold damage (Shanghan), the functions of the zang-fu organs have not yet returned to equilibrium. The spleen and stomach remain weak. If there have been multiple instances of sweating or purging treatments, both the exterior and interior are deficient. Following recent recovery, if dietary habits are irregular, the stomach qi fails to circulate normally and cannot decompose and transform the five grains, resulting in the stagnation and indigestion of retained food.
