Cold malaria (Han Nue) is a disease pattern caused by the intermingling of Yin and Yang. When Yang Qi is deficient, Yin prevails; when Yin prevails, cold generates from within, resulting in coldness both internally and externally. Therefore, upon onset, the patient experiences only trembling, shivering, and clenching of the jaw.
To treat cold malaria characterized by Yang deficiency, Yin excess, internal and external coldness, and continuous trembling of the four limbs, use Hengshan Wan (Hedyotis Pill).
* Hengshan (Radix Dichroae): Ban Liang
* Yeli Tougu (Bone of Wild Cat Head): Yi Fen
* Hutou Gu (Bone of Tiger Head): Yi Fen
* Husun Tougu (Bone of Monkey Head): Yi Fen
* Tianlinggai (Skull Cap of Human): Yi Fen
* Lvdou Mo (Powder of Mung Bean): San Fen
* Chouhuang (Arsenic Sulfide Ore, finely ground): Yi Fen
* Pishuang (Arsenic Trioxide): Yi Fen
* Ruxiang (Boswellia Fructus): Yi Fen
All ingredients are used raw, pounded and sieved into powder. They are mixed with soft rice paste, pounded for three to two hundred strokes, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wutongzi). During preparation, filial sons or daughters must not be present. Take one pill per dose.
For cold malaria presenting with chills but no fever, and continuous trembling of the four limbs, use Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill).
* Zhusha (Cinnabaris): Yi Fen, finely ground
* Shexiang (Moschus): Ban Liang, finely ground
* Pishuang (Arsenic Trioxide): Yi Fen, finely ground
* Hengshan (Radix Dichroae): Yi Fen, chopped
* Hutou Gu (Bone of Tiger Head): Yi Fen, coated with butter and roasted until yellow
* Awèi (Ferulae Resina): Yi Fen
* Badou (Semen Crotonis): Yi Fen, skin and heart removed, boiled in two Sheng of water until dry, pressed to remove oil, and ground into flour-like consistency
Pound and sieve all ingredients into powder. Prepare on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (Duanwu Festival). Mix with a paste made from flour boiled in vinegar, pound for three to two hundred strokes, and form pills the size of pea seeds. Wrap in red silk for storage. Take as directed.
For intractable cold malaria, use Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill).
* Xionghuang (Realgar): Yi Fen
* Liuhuang (Sulfur): Yi Fen
* Zhusha (Cinnabaris): Yi Fen
* Shexiang (Moschus): Ban Liang
* Awèi (Ferulae Resina): Ban Fen

* Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis): Yi Fen, used raw
* Badou (Semen Crotonis): Yi Fen, skin and heart removed, boiled in two Sheng of water until dry, pressed to remove oil, and ground into flour-like consistency
Mix all ingredients and grind uniformly fine. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds using a paste made from flour boiled in vinegar. Before the attack, wrap one pill in cotton and insert it into both ears: for males, the left ear; for females, the right ear. Additionally, tie one pill wrapped in red silk to the arm. One pill is sufficient to treat seven persons.
