When a child is in the womb, the mother may be affected by wind-heat pathogens. After birth, the qi of heat-toxin remains stagnant in the zang-fu organs and cannot be dispersed or unblocked. Due to irregular breastfeeding and feeding habits, if the condition persists for a long time, it develops into pediatric "Nao Gan" (Brain Malnutrition Syndrome).
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with body fever and dry, withered hair, use Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill).
Ingredients: Calculus Bovis (1 fen, finely ground), Moschus (0.5 fen, finely ground), Borneolum Syntheticum (0.5 fen, finely ground), Indigo Naturalis (0.5 liang, finely ground), Ursi Fel (1 fen, ground and incorporated).
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize the above ingredients and sieve them into powder. Mix thoroughly and grind until uniform. Bind with wheat paste to form pills the size of yellow millet grains. Administer 5 pills per dose with warm water, three times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
Pediatric Nao Gan is caused by fetal heat. Symptoms include shiny and tight scalp skin, hair matted into tufts, sores and scabs on the temples, and occasional puffy swelling of the cheeks. For this condition, use the following prescription:
Ingredients: Indigo Naturalis (0.5 liang, finely ground), Gentianae Radix (0.5 liang, removed rhizome), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (0.5 liang), Poria Cocos with Red Heart (0.5 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (0.5 liang, removed roots), Isatis Folium/Indigo source (quantity unspecified in text, implied as adjunct).
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize and sieve the ingredients. Bind with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Administer 5 pills per dose with warm water, three times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with dry eyes, excessive sleepiness, palpitations and fright, refusal to nurse or eat, and sallow emaciation, Hu Jing Wan (Tiger Eye Pill) is suitable.
Ingredients: Tiger Eye (1 pair, soaked in wine overnight, lightly roasted), Cornu Rhinocerotis (0.5 liang), Margarita Powder (0.5 liang), Scutellariae Radix (0.5 liang), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, sliced).
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize and sieve the ingredients. Mix thoroughly and grind until uniform. Bind with refined honey to form pills the size of hemp seeds. For one-year-old infants, administer 1 pill with milk, three times daily. Increase dosage slightly for older children.
For chronic pediatric Nao Gan that has not healed, presenting with sallow emaciation, dry and withered head and face, sores around eyes and nose, high fever, and excessive thirst, use Huagan Wan (Malnutrition Dissolving Pill).
Ingredients: Bufo Bufaginis Cutis Ash (0.5 liang), Indigo Naturalis (0.5 liang, finely ground), Eriocauli Flos Ash (1 fen), Calculus Bovis (1 fen, finely ground), Aucklandiae Radix (1 fen), Caryophylli Flos (1 fen, finely ground), Cornu Rhinocerotis (1 fen), Calomelas (0.5 fen, ground and incorporated), Saigae Tataricae Cornu (1 fen), Arsenicum Sulfuratum Rubrum (0.5 fen, finely ground), Arecae Semen (1 fen), Coptidis Rhizoma? No, Picrorhizae Rhizoma (1 fen). *Note: Text lists Huhuanglian which is Picrorhizae.*
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize and sieve the ingredients. Incorporate Calculus Bovis and other fine powders. Bind with refined honey to form pills the size of broomcorn millet. Administer 1 pill per year of age with gruel broth, three times daily.
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with emaciation and vexatious heat, use Longnao Wan (Borneol Pill).
Ingredients: Borneolum Syntheticum (1 qian), Calculus Bovis (1 fen), Moschus (1 qian), Cinnabaris (1 fen), Ursi Fel (1 fen), Aloe (1 fen), Dried Bufo Bufaginis Cutis Ash (quantity unspecified).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into powder. Dissolve Ursi Fel in water and bind to form pills the size of hemp seeds. If too hard, add glutinous rice flour during processing. Administer appropriate number of pills with mint decoction.
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with dry, erect hair matted into tufts, white membrane over eyes, and sores on the tip of the nose, use Tongnao Dingxiang San (Clove Powder for Unblocking Brain).
Ingredients: Caryophylli Flos (1 fen), Cochleae Concha (1 fen, roasted until yellow), Adzuki Bean (1 fen), Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (1 fen, including seeds).
Preparation and Administration: Pulverize and sieve into fine powder. Take a small amount and insufflate into the nasal cavity using a bamboo tube. This method applies to the five types of Gan syndrome. If the condition is severe, worms may be expelled from the nose.
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with vexatious heat, dry skin, and emaciation, use Qingdai San (Indigo Naturalis Powder).
Ingredients: Indigo Naturalis (1 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced), Sanguisorbae Radix (0.5 liang), Cochlea (1 liang, roasted until yellow), Pogostemon Cablin Root (1 fen), Moschus (small amount).

Preparation and Administration: Finely grind all ingredients. Mix with 1 sheng of well-water. Store in a porcelain vessel and simmer in a double boiler (water bath). Stir frequently with a bamboo spatula to prevent sticking or drying out.
For pediatric Nao Gan presenting with nasal congestion, headache, dim vision, photophobia, and aversion to sunlight, use Chuanbi Longnao San (Insufflation Borneol Powder).
Ingredients: Borneolum Syntheticum (small amount, finely ground), Cochleae Concha (1 fen, roasted until yellow), Bufo Bufaginis Cutis Ash (1 fen), Cucumeris Trichosanthis Fructus (1 fen), Moschus (small amount, finely ground).
