When wind-heat pathogens contend in the Yang meridians and enter the blood vessels, stasis of blood generates heat. The Ying (Nutritive) Qi becomes full and obstructed, failing to circulate freely, thereby causing mental restlessness and confusion. The Heart governs the Shen (Spirit), and its condition is reflected on the tongue. The Shen is the master of the Heart, and the tongue is the external orifice of the Heart. The mechanisms of speech all originate from the Heart. Now that the Heart-Shen is congested with heat and simultaneously attacked by wind-pathogens, one's true nature becomes disordered, and the spirit fails to remain anchored, resulting in delirious speech.
For treating Heart-wind manifesting as delirious speech, mental vagueness, and fear, the Fushen San (Poria Cocos Powder) formula is appropriate.
