Moon-eating sores are lesions that arise between the two ears and on the nose and face, as well as on the sides of various orifices in the lower body. The erosion can penetrate to the level of sinews and bones. The sores form at the beginning of the lunar month and diminish by the end of the month; because they follow the waxing and waning of the moon, they are named "Moon-eating sores" (Yueshi Chuang). Additionally, sores appearing below the ears in children are also called Moon-eating sores. Folklore states that if a child points at the moon with their finger, they may contract this condition.
Formula for Ni Fen San (Calomel Powder) to treat Moon-eating sores:
Ni Fen (Calomel, 1 liang), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, roots removed and powdered), Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate, 1 liang, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Song Zhi (Pine Resin, 1 liang).
Grind all the above ingredients into a fine powder. First, wash the sore clean with warm fermented grain water mixed with salt, then dry it. Apply the powder to the lesion. If the sore is dry, mix the powder with raw sesame oil (or vegetable oil) for topical application. Continue treatment until healed.
Another formula:
Wu Zhu Yu Gen (Evodiae Radix, 2 liang), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 2 liang), Qiang Wei Gen (Rosae Multiflorae Radix, 2 liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients through a fine sieve to make a powder. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add to bath water, and wash the affected area when the water temperature is suitable until healed.
Another formula:
Xia Ma (Toad, 1 specimen collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, calcined to ash), Liu Huang (Sulfur, 1 liang), Bai Fan (Alumen, 1 liang, calcined to ash).
Grind the above ingredients finely into a powder and apply to the sore until healed.
Another formula:
Zi Si Qing Wa (Dead Frog, 1 specimen, calcined to ash), Mu Zhu Ti Ke (Pig Trotter Hoof Shell, 1 piece, calcined to ash), Jiu Yue Zhang (Jiu Yue Zhang, a plant, calcined to ash).
Grind all ingredients finely. Take a small amount, mix with honey, and apply topically.
Formula for sudden onset of Moon-eating sores in adults and children:
Xia Ma (Toad, 1 specimen from the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, calcined to ash).
Grind finely and mix with Pig Fat (Su Zhi) for topical application.
Another formula:
Collect Rabbit Feces (Tu Fen) on the night of the full moon (Wang Ri), insert it into the abdomen of a toad, and calcine the mixture to ash. Grind finely and apply to the lesion.
Another formula:
Luo Mo Cao (Luo Mo Cao, specific herb name).
Crush and extract the juice for topical application.
Another formula:
Di Long Fen (Earthworm Excrement, 1 he, calcined until red-hot and ground finely).
Mix evenly with Pig Fat (Su Zhi) and apply.
Another formula:
Jiu Yue Shi Gu Pi (Drum Skin used to ward off Moon Eclipses, size of a hand).
Soak in strong vinegar overnight, extract the juice, and apply. Alternatively, calcine to ash, grind finely, and mix with Mian Zhi (Flour Paste/Fat) for application.
Another formula:
Hu Tou Gu (Tiger Skull Bone, 2 liang).
Crush the bone and decoct in 1 sheng of Pig Fat (Su Zhi) until the bone turns scorched yellow. Strain out the residue and apply the oil to the affected area.
