Qi obstruction (Qi Ge) and fullness in the chest, diaphragm, abdomen, and intestines are caused by cold pathogen stagnating in the chest and diaphragm, leading to rebellious Qi and distension. Symptoms include a sensation of blockage in the throat with difficulty swallowing, belching with a food odor, and abdominal distension. These conditions all result from disharmony between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi.
For treating Qi obstruction and fullness in the chest, diaphragm, abdomen, and intestines, accompanied by inability to eat, oppression and stuffiness in the shoulders and back, and vexing pain in the four limbs, use the Chai Hu San (Bupleurum Powder):
Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, 2 liang, remove seedlings), Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, half liang, honey-fried until slightly red, cut into pieces), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Bark, 2 liang).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six-tenths of the original volume. Strain out the dregs. Take at any time.
For treating Qi obstruction with spitting of saliva and phlegm, indigestion, fullness in the chest and abdomen with borborygmus (rumbling sounds), use the Pi Pa Ye San (Loquat Leaf Powder):
Pi Pa Ye (Folium Eriobotryae, 1 liang, wipe off hairs, fry until slightly yellow), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, remove rhizome), Bing Lang (Semen Arecae, 1 liang), Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, 1 liang, wash seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve them finely to make a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six-tenths of the original volume. Strain out the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treating Qi obstruction and fullness in the chest and abdomen due to deficiency and weakness of Spleen and Stomach Qi, resulting in inability to eat, use the He Li Le San (Terminalia Chebula Powder):
He Li Le Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 1 liang), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 3 fen, remove rhizome), Jing San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii, 3 fen, lightly roasted and cut), Cao Dou Kou (Semen Amomi Rotundus, 1 liang, remove skin), Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 liang, remove white pith and roast).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve them finely to make a powder. Take 1 qian per dose mixed with decoction of fresh ginger and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), at any time.
For treating Qi obstruction, fullness in the chest and abdomen, stiffness and tension in the four limbs, and heavy body weight, use the Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder):
Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 fen), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae, half liang), He Li Le Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 3 fen), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 fen), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and cut), Ding Xiang (Flos Caryophylli, half liang, soaked to remove white pith and roasted).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve them finely to make a powder. Take 1 qian per dose mixed with decoction of fresh ginger and Quince (Mu Gua), at any time.
For long-standing Qi obstruction, fullness in the chest and abdomen, choking sensation in the throat, and inability to ingest food or drink, this formula is suitable:
Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith), He Li Le Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 1.5 liang).
Crush the above ingredients and sieve them finely to make a powder. Take 1 qian per dose mixed with decoction of fresh ginger and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), at any time.
For treating Qi obstruction, choking sensation in the throat, fullness in the chest and abdomen, inability to eat or drink, and oppression in both chest and back, use the Chi Fu Ling Wan (Red Poria Pill):
Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Bark, 1 liang), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 fen, roasted until cracked and cut), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, half liang, honey-fried until slightly red and cut), Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Bing Lang (Semen Arecae, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey and pound for three to two hundred strokes to form pills the size of a bullet. Contain one pill in the mouth at any time and swallow the saliva. If the condition is severe, take orally as usual.
For treating Qi obstruction, fullness in the chest and abdomen, inability to eat, occasional vomiting, and disharmony in the four limbs, use the Ren Shen Wan (Ginseng Pill):
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 2 liang, remove rhizome), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos with Red Bark, 1 liang), He Li Le Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and cut).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey and pound for three to two hundred strokes to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with Ginger Decoction, at any time.
For treating Qi obstruction, chronic cold in the Spleen and Stomach, fullness in the chest and abdomen, loss of taste in food, and sallow complexion, use the Chen Xiang Wan (Agarwood Pill):
Chen Xiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, half liang), Ding Xiang (Flos Caryophylli, half liang), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae, half liang), Bing Lang (Semen Arecae, half liang), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), He Li Le Pi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Add Moschus (She Xiang) and grind evenly. Mix with refined honey and pound for three to five hundred strokes to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take at any time with Ginger Decoction.
