In cases where heat-toxin qi attacks the eyes, it is due to latent heat accumulating in the zang organs, causing stagnation and obstruction in the heart and diaphragm. The severe steaming of heat-toxin affects the Liver, rushing upward to the eyes. Since Liver qi connects with the eyes, and the eyes are the orifice of the Liver, if attacked by pathogenic heat, symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, or the formation of nebulae (cloudy membranes on the eye) will occur.
For treating febrile diseases where heat-toxin qi attacks the eyes, causing redness, dryness, swelling, and pain, the Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) formula is suitable.
Xi Jiao Xie (Rhinoceri Cornu, half liang), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, one liang, heart removed, baked), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, half liang, radix head removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, half liang), Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, half liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, half liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, half liang, cut into pieces, slightly stir-fried), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, half liang, stamens removed), Daqing (Isatidis Folium, half liang), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, half liang), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, half liang).
