Zhen disease (mass disease) arises from irregularities in cold and warmth, leading to deficiency of Qi in the fu and zang organs. Consequently, food and drink fail to digest, accumulate internally, gradually grow, form masses, and become firmly entrenched.
Diagnosis and Treatment: For Zhen disease formed due to indigestion, use Aconite Pill (Wutou Wan).
Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Chuan Wutou, half liang) Rhizoma Sparganii (Jing Sanleng, half liang, lightly roasted and crushed) Flos Genkwa (Yuanhua, half liang, mixed with vinegar and stir-fried until dry) Semen Crotonis (Badou, half liang, husked, cored, ground, wrapped in paper, and pressed to remove oil) Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Houpo, half liang, soaked in decoction, scraped to remove rough bark)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed with Badou, and ground evenly. Mix one sheng of wine and two sheng of vinegar, simmer over slow heat until resembling thin syrup, then remove from fire.
For Zhen disease that does not resolve, characterized by emaciation and fatigue of the four limbs, anorexia, and chronic non-healing, use Borax Pill (Pengsha Wan).
Borax (Pengsha, one liang, finely ground) Sulphur (Liuhuang, one liang, finely ground and washed with water via levigation) Lignum Aucklandiae (Muxiang, half liang) Fructus Arecae (Binglang, one liang) Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Chuan Dahuang, three liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, one liang, roasted until yellow, removed from skirt-like wrinkles)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed with the previously ground ingredients, and kneaded evenly. Combine with refined honey, pound and beat three hundred times, and shape into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take on an empty stomach daily and in the evening after meals.
For Zhen disease presenting with hardness and pain in the abdomen, anorexia, chronic non-healing, emaciation, and weakness, use Cinnabar Pill (Zhusha Wan).
Mineral Cinnabar (Zhusha, one liang, finely ground and washed with water via levigation) Cortex Cinnamomi (Rougui, one liang, wrinkled bark removed and powdered) Semen Crotonis (Badou, twenty grains, husked, cored, ground, wrapped in paper, and pressed to remove oil) Halloysitum Rubrum (Yuyuliang, one liang, calcined in fire and quenched in vinegar seven times)
The above herbs are all ground evenly. Soak steamed wheat dough in decoction to bind the pills, shaping them to the size of mung beans. Take five pills before meals with warm wine.
For Zhen disease causing chest and abdominal oppression, anorexia, and disharmony of the four limbs, use Rhubarb Pill (Dahuang Wan).
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Chuan Dahuang, half liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Lignum Aucklandiae (Muxiang, half liang) Semen Myristicae (Roudoukou, half liang, shell removed) Borax (Pengsha, half liang, finely ground) Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Ganjiang, half liang, processed/cracked) Cortex Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, half liang)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed with Badou and Pengsha, and ground evenly. Simmer vinegar into a paste to bind the pills, shaping them to the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take on an empty stomach with gruel drink.
For Zhen disease with hard masses and heart/abdominal pain, use Sparganium Pill (Jing Sanleng Wan).
Rhizoma Sparganii (Jing Sanleng, one and a half liang, lightly roasted and crushed) Fructus Arecae (Binglang, one liang) Lignum Aucklandiae (Muxiang, one liang) Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Ganjiang, one liang, processed, cracked, and crushed) Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi, one fen, soaked in decoction, white pith removed)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder. Simmer Badou in vinegar into a paste, mix with the aforementioned powders, and shape into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take on an empty stomach with ginger and tangerine peel decoction.
Formula for chronic Zhen masses and blood masses.
Realgar (Pishuang) Sublimated Mercury Chloride (Fenshuang) Borax (Pengsha) Calomel (Nifen)
The above herbs are finely ground evenly. Use fat dates, remove pits, insert the medicine inside, tie securely with thread, wrap each individually in white flour dough, and roast until cooked.
For Zhen disease with hard masses in the abdomen, use Trogopterus Dung Pill (Wulingzhi Wan).
Trogopteri Excrement (Wulingzhi, one liang) Radix Dictamni (Fang Kui, half liang) Cortex Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin, half liang) Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zhuya Zaojiao, half liang, black skin removed, coated with lard, roasted until dark yellow, seeds removed) Semen Crotonis (Badou, half liang, fried with bran until black, husked, membrane and core removed, ground thoroughly, wrapped in paper, and pressed to remove oil) Lignum Aucklandiae (Muxiang, half liang)
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed with Badou, and ground evenly. Boil wheat paste in vinegar to bind the pills, shaping them to the size of millet grains. Take on an empty stomach and before bed.
Another formula.
Sulphur (Liuhuang, one liang, finely ground) Borax (Pengsha, one liang, finely ground) Semen Crotonis (Badou, one liang) Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, one liang, processed, husked, navel removed, pounded and sifted into powder)
The above herbs: first boil Badou in two sheng of first-run vinegar until reddish, then remove. Place in a bowl of cold water, soak for the duration of cooking two meals, wash clean, and remove husk, core.
For Zhen disease that persists chronically, causing sallow complexion, emaciation, and anorexia, use Croton Seed Pill (Badou Wan).
Semen Crotonis (Badou, one liang, husked, cored, ground, wrapped in paper, and pressed to remove oil) Sulphur (Liuhuang, finely ground) Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, processed, husked, navel removed) Trogopteri Excrement (Wulingzhi) Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Ganjiang, processed and crushed)
Each half liang.
The above herbs are pounded, sifted into powder, mixed evenly, and bound with wheat paste to shape pills the size of brocorn millet. Take on an empty stomach, five pills with vinegar water.
