Phlegm (Tan, Phlegm) is a condition caused by the accumulation of phlegm-fluids and water-dampness in the chest and viscera, flowing into the region of the Bladder. If it remains unresolved for a long time, it spreads to the Spleen and Stomach. The Spleen and Stomach dislike dampness; upon encountering water-dampness, they become distended. Distension impairs their ability to digest food. This may manifest as empty fullness in the abdomen, indigestion of water and grain, or occasional retching and vomiting. These are all clinical manifestations of this condition.
For symptoms of Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, accumulation of phlegm-fluids, and indigestion due to dietary stagnation, the Qianhu San Powder is indicated.
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, 1 liang, with rhizome removed), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 3 fen), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium, 1 liang, sliced), Pipaye (Eriobotryae Folium, 3 fen, trichomes wiped off, stir-baked until slightly red, sliced), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, stir-baked until slightly red, sliced).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with one large cup of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger until reduced to 0.5 cup. Strain and take warm at any time.
For symptoms of Qi obstruction with phlegm-fluids, pain under both hypochondria, and indigestion, the Baizhu San Powder is indicated.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 liang, with radix removed), ChiShaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 3 fen), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 fen, soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 liang, rough bark removed), Helilepi (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium, 1 liang, stir-baked).
