The liver is deficient and damaged, and the Qi and Blood fail to nourish and moisten. Internal injury by cold causes distension and fullness in both hypochondriac regions, spasm and tension of tendons and vessels, coldness of the four limbs, pain in the heart and abdomen, dimness of the eyes, persistent bluish-green discoloration of the hands and feet, discomfort in the chest, and an inability to sigh deeply. These are signs of Liver Qi deficiency.
For treatment of Liver deficiency manifesting as distension and fullness in both hypochondriac regions, spasm and tension of tendons and vessels, dyspnea (inability to breathe smoothly), weakness of the four limbs, and visual impairment, Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder) is indicated.
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 3 fen, remove rhizome head) Xixin (Herba Asari, 3 fen) Baifuling (Poria, 3 fen) Baiziren (Semen Platycladi, 3 fen) Taoren (Semen Persicae, 3 fen, soaked in water, remove skin and tips, double kernels removed, stir-baked until slightly red).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhan (unit of volume) of water and three dates. Decoct together until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treatment of Liver Qi deficiency manifesting as unsmooth movement of tendons and vessels, stagnation in the heart and diaphragm, distension and discomfort in the left hypochondrium, and loss of appetite, Baifuling San (Poria Powder) is indicated.
Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang) Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, 1 liang, remove rhizome head) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, half liang) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang, crushed) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang) Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, 1 liang). [Note: The text fragment "liang bran-fried until slightly yellow" appears without a preceding herb name in the source, likely a textual omission].
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct together until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time. Avoid eating Amaranth.
For treatment of Liver Qi deficiency leading to deficiency-cold, pain and distension below the chest and hypochondrium, rapid breathing, cloudy and dim vision, and unclear sight, Binglang San (Areca Seed Powder) is indicated.
Binglang (Semen Arecae, 1 liang) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, 1 liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 1 liang, remove rhizome head) Szaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, 1 liang, lightly stir-baked) Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, half liang, cracked, peel and umbilicus removed) Chuanpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, half liang, remove white pith).
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time. Avoid eating Amaranth.
When Liver Qi is deficient, it injures the Gallbladder. Injury to the Gallbladder leads to fearfulness, a bluish-white complexion, spasm and tension of tendons and vessels, and unclear vision. Suanzao Ren San (Ziziphus Seed Powder) is indicated.
Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, 1 liang, lightly stir-baked) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, 1 liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang) Baifuling (Poria, 1 liang) Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 1 liang) Xiongnu (Radix Angelicae Sinensis? *Correction*: Text says "Xiong", likely Xiongnu or Chuanxiong contextually, but strictly "Xiong". In Song texts, often refers to Chuanxiong or similar. Let's stick to literal "Xiong" if ambiguous, but standard is Chuanxiong. Given "Chuan" is missing, I will translate as Xiong (likely Radix Ligustici or Angelicae)). *Self-correction*: The text says "Xiong ". It is likely a typo for Chuanxiong or just Xiong. I will use Xiong. Maimendong (Tuber Ophiopogonis, 1 liang, remove heart) Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1 liang, crushed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, half liang, stir-baked until red, crushed).
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time.
For treatment of Liver Qi deficiency manifesting as dimness of both eyes, rising of hot Qi, tearing, pain, empty distension in both hypochondria, and unsmooth movement of tendons and vessels, Fupenzi Wan (Rubus Fruit Pill) is indicated.
Fupenzi (Fructus Rubi, 1 liang) Xixin (Herba Asari, half liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, half liang, crushed and lightly stir-baked) Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae, half liang) Xiong (Radix... see above, half liang) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, half liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng, half liang, remove rhizome head) Baifuling (Poria, half liang) Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, half liang) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, half liang) Baiziren (Semen Platycladi, half liang) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, half liang, stir-baked until slightly red, crushed).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey and pound 200-300 times. Form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose at any time, washed down with millet gruel. Avoid alcohol, damp flour, roasted foods, and fried/popped foods.
