The Spleen receives the essence from food and drink, transforms it into Qi and Blood, nourishes the Zang-Fu organs, and fills the muscles and skin. If its Qi fails to provide nourishment, it cannot assist the Stomach in transporting and transforming fluids, nor complete the systemic metabolism and distribution.
For treating deficiency of Spleen Qi manifesting as distension and fullness in the abdomen and hypochondrium, weakness in the four limbs, and poor appetite, Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder) is indicated.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1 liang, cut), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 liang, processed until cracked, peel and navel removed), Helile (Fructus Terminaliae Chebulae, 1.5 liang, baked, using the peel), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, rhizome removed), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 0.5 liang), Bai Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli, 0.5 liang), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 0.5 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow).
The above ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhongzhan of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 3 jujubes. Decoct until 0.6 of the liquid remains, strain, and take warm before meals. Avoid cold, raw, greasy foods, and damp wheat products.
