For chest and heart pain caused by Ge Qi (Diaphragmatic Qi Stagnation), it stems from pre-existing cold pathogenic factors residing between the Zang-Fu organs. Due to obstruction and stagnation in the meridians, circulation cannot be unblocked; with deficient organ qi and flourishing pathogenic factors, the cold attacks upward.
Formula for treating Ge Qi stagnation attacking the heart, with chest pain radiating to the shoulders and back, persisting day and night: Chifuling San (Red Poria Powder).
Chifuling (Poria, 1 liang) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 1 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang, remove rhizome) Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, 2 liang, soak in hot water, remove white pith, dry-bake) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 liang) Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 2 liang, remove rough bark)
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six-tenths of the original volume. Strain out the dregs. Take at any time.
