Whenever one is bitten by a snake, do not directly say the word "snake." Instead, refer to it as "insect" (chóng). Also use the term "snake rope" (shé suǒ), and do not speak its name directly. There are many types of venomous snakes, and their toxicity varies in severity.
During April and May, frogs with triangular heads are known as Cānghuǐ (Green Viper); those with white heads are Huǒyì (Fire Lizard). During June and July, Zhúshòu (Bamboo Hunter) and Àifù (Mugwort Pit Viper) appear; these have black armor, red eyes, yellow mouths, and hooked tails. There are also beasts like Qiānrén Shòu (Person-Dragging Beast).
If bitten by the Hēidì Snake (Black Emperor Snake), the wound becomes cold. If untreated, death may occur within seven days. For any snake bite wound that has not healed, hot food must be prohibited. Consuming hot food will cause the condition to flare up. Treatment should follow the methods used immediately after being bitten.
For treating pain from snake bites, apply this formula:
Hékǒujiāo (Amomum fruit, 2 liang), Cāng'ěrmiáo (Xanthium seedling, 5 liang), Shēngjiāngzhī (Fresh ginger juice, 2 he), Liúhuáng (Sulfur, 0.5 liang).
Mix the above ingredients, pound thoroughly into a paste, and apply to the bite site for good effect.
Another prescription:
Dìlóng (Earthworm, 5 pieces), Wúgōng (Centipede, 1 piece, collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, preferably with red legs).
Mix the above ingredients, pound thoroughly into a paste, and apply to the bite site.
Another prescription:
Shèxiāng (Musk, 1 fen, finely ground), Xiónghuáng (Realgar, 1 fen, finely ground), Bànxiàmò (Pinellia powder, 1 fen, raw).
Grind all ingredients uniformly and apply to the wound for immediate recovery.
Another prescription:
Báifán (Alum, 1 liang), Gāncǎo (Licorice root, 1 liang, raw).
Pound and sieve into a fine powder. If upon being bitten one feels heat and irritability in the heart/chest and sees darkness before the eyes, take one qian with fresh well water to stop symptoms. If there is minor swelling or qi stagnation, boil Alum, salted brine water, and Lètúigēn (Lettuce root) for three to five boils, then wash the area to eliminate the swelling. Another prescription:
Báifán (Alum, 2 liang, ground), Dàmáyè (Hemp leaf, 5 liang, chopped), Cāngróng jīngyè (Stems and leaves of Cangrong plant, 5 liang, chopped).
Boil the above ingredients in one dou of water until reduced to six sheng. Strain, add powdered Alum, and soak the affected area in the warm liquid.
Another prescription:
Māor fèn (Cat feces, 3 liang, calcined to ash), Gānjiāng (Dried ginger, 2 liang, chopped), Niújiǎo (Cow horn, 2 liang, calcined to ash), Chòuhuáng (Stinkstone/Asafoetida, 1 liang).
Pound and sieve into a fine powder. Mix with saliva and apply to the bite site.
Another prescription:
Take a single-clove garlic, slice thinly, place on the bite site, and apply moxa cones on top. Moxibustion until heat penetrates deeply results in recovery.
For treating snake bites where the wound has closed but residual toxin remains inside, causing creeping pain or itching:
Dàsuàn (Garlic, 1 sheng), Xiǎosuàn (Small garlic/Shallot, 1 sheng).
Pound the ingredients together, decoct in water to wash the area, and extract juice to irrigate the wound cavity for recovery.
Another prescription:
Apply Jiǎjiān (Turtle shell preparation/jelly). This is highly effective and can also be used for scorpion stings.
Another prescription:
Take 1 liang of Péngshā (Borax), grind finely. Harvest fresh Lóucōng (Wild Allium/Garlic chive) from the garden. Remove the tip of the green onion bulb, pour the Borax powder inside, and replace the tip. Dig up the onion after seven days. Collect the Borax-infused juice onto thin paper and dry in shade. When injured, cut a coin-sized piece of the dried paper and apply to the wound for immediate healing.
Another prescription:
Pound garlic thoroughly and apply to the wound. Apply three to four times daily for recovery.
Another prescription:
Apply Báizhī (White sap/milk) from Mulberry tree bark to the wound. Apply three to four times daily.
Another prescription:
Finely chop Hēidòuyè (Black soybean leaves), pound into a paste, and apply to the wound. Use four to five times daily.
Another prescription:
Take a large handful of Shuǐliǎo (Water pepper/Polygonum hydropiper), pound into a paste, and apply to the bite site. Replace immediately when dry.
Another prescription:
Wash the wound with warm wine. Use three to four times daily.
Another prescription:
Heat the head of a knife until red-hot. Place Alum on the hot blade until it melts. While hot, drip the liquid onto the bite site for immediate recovery.
Another prescription:
Boil a green bamboo tube in vinegar. Place the hot tube over the bite site. After a moment, yellow fluid and foam will emerge, indicating recovery.
Another prescription:
Chew Yuǎnzhì (Polygala root) until soft/pasty, apply to the affected area, and insert a small piece into the bite puncture. Change frequently.
Another prescription:
Take 5 sheng of Black Soybeans, crush them, and divide into two portions. Soak in a basin with water covering them by three to four cun. Immerse the bitten limb in the bean water for a long time. Discard old beans, replace with fresh ones, and re-immersse. Recovery occurs within two or three changes. Additionally, taking Black Soybean powder mixed with water orally is also beneficial.
Another prescription:
Crush Kǔhúlú gēnyè (Roots and leaves of bitter calabash) and apply as a poultice to the wound opening for immediate recovery.
Another prescription:
Break an egg at one end to make a hole. Place the hole against the bite site. The egg will turn black shortly; replace with a new one. Continue until the condition resolves.
Another prescription:
Mix Zhūzhī (Pork lard) with Lùjiǎohuī (Deer antler ash) and apply to the wound for recovery.
Another prescription:
Crush and squeeze Zǐxiàn (Amaranth) to extract juice. Drink one zhong cup of the juice, and apply the residue to seal the wound. Irrigate with a small amount of water for recovery.
Another prescription:
Apply Sōutóuchòu (Hair comb dirt/grease) to the wound for recovery.
Another prescription:
Cook and pound Hékǒujiāo (Amomum fruit) and Suàyè (Garlic leaves) together, then apply to the wound for recovery.
Formula to repel various snakes when entering mountains:
Xiónghuáng (Realgar), Shèxiāng (Musk), Gānjiāng (Dried Ginger) in equal parts, pounded into powder.
Grind all ingredients finely, store in a pouch, and wear it. Men wear it on the left side, women on the right. If bitten by a snake, apply the powder to the wound for good effect.
Another prescription:
Constantly burn Yángjiǎo (Sheep horns) to produce smoke; snakes will flee.
Formula for treating a situation where a snake enters the mouth during sleep due to seeking coolness and cannot be pulled out:
Cut open the tail of the snake, insert three grains of raw Pepper (Jiāo) into the incision, and wrap it. The snake will exit shortly.
Formula for treating a snake entering the mouth and the seven orifices:
Cut open the head/tail of a sow, collect the dripping blood, and administer into the mouth to expel the toxin/snake.
Formula for treating poisoning from snake bone spicules piercing the skin:
Take TieFěn (Iron powder) the size of a soybean, place in a tube, and blow into the wound for good effect.
Another prescription:
Jīfèn bái (Chicken manure white part, 2 liang, calcined to ash).
Grind finely into powder. Take one qian each time, mixed with warm wine. Continue until recovered.
