Chi dysentery (red dysentery) arises from the weakness of the intestines and stomach, where wind pathogenic factors cause injury, thereby夹杂着 heat. When heat enters the blood level, it flows and infiltrates into the intestines, mixing with the dysenteric discharge to be passed down. Hence, it is called Chi dysentery.
For treating Chi dysentery accompanied by abdominal pain, astringent and painful urination, dry mouth, and vexation with fever, use the Xijiao San Formula:
Xijiao Xie (Horn of Rhinoceros Shavings), Muxiang (Costus Root), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Process these herbs by pounding and sieving them into a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to five fen, remove the dregs, and take slightly warm at any time.
For treating severe Chi dysentery with unbearable abdominal pain, use the Chishaoyao San Formula:
Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex).
Process these herbs by pounding and sieving them into a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong of light fermented grain water, decoct until reduced to five fen, remove the dregs, and take slightly warm at any time.
For treating Chi dysentery with vexation and thirst, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, use the Longgu San Formula:
Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xijiao Xie (Horn of Rhinoceros Shavings), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Glue).
Process these herbs by pounding finely and sieving through a fine mesh. Take one or two qian per dose, mixed with rice broth, at any time.
For treating Chi dysentery that has persisted for years without healing:
Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Shuweicao (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Herba - *Note: Contextually likely refers to a specific local herb or typo in ancient text, often interpreted as Salvia or similar astringent herbs in modern context, but literal translation used*).
Process these herbs by pounding finely and sieving through a fine mesh. Take two qian per dose, mixed with rice broth, before meals.
Another formula:
Shuweicao (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Herba), Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex), Qiangweigen (Rosae Rugosae Radix), Hushupi (Quercus Mongolica Bark).
Process these herbs by pounding finely and sieving through a fine mesh. Take two qian per dose, mixed with rice broth, before meals.
For treating Chi dysentery with unbearable abdominal pain, use the Aiye Wan Formula:
Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Muxiang (Costus Root), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Fulonggan (Dragon's Liver), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Glue), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Process these herbs by pounding into powder, mix with refined honey, and pound 300-200 times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, with rice broth, at any time.
