Lumbago caused by wind-dampness arises from exhaustion damaging the Kidney Qi, leaving the meridians and collaterals deficient. It may also result from lying on damp ground or being exposed to drafts, allowing dampness to invade the Kidney meridian when the body's defenses are weak, where it clashes with Qi and Blood.
For Kidney-type lumbago due to wind-dampness, with pain radiating to the legs and knees, stubborn numbness and bi-syndrome preventing movement, the Duhuo San (Angelica Pubescens Powder) is indicated.
Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), 1 liang; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 0.5 liang, sliced; Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), 3 fen, radix tip removed; Baixianpi (Cortex Dictamni), 0.5 liang; Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), 1 liang; Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), 0.5 liang; Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), 1 liang, processed by dry-frying.
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen. Strain the dregs. Drink slightly warm before meals.
For Kidney-type lumbago due to wind-dampness, characterized by difficulty in walking and standing, the Bajui San (Morinda Officinalis Powder) is indicated.

The above herbs are finely crushed and sieved to make a powder. Take 2 qian per dose before meals, mixed with warm wine.
For lumbago due to Kidney Qi deficiency and decline, or invasion by wind-cold-dampness, resulting in cold bi-syndrome, flaccidity, and weakness in the legs and knees, the Tianxiong Wan (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Pill) is indicated.
Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), 1 liang, processed, skin and umbilicus removed; Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), 3 fen; Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), 1.5 liang, rough bark removed, stir-baked until slightly yellow, sliced; Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), 1 liang, processed, skin and umbilicus removed; Bajitian (Radix Morindae Officinalis), 1 fen; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 1 fen; Bixie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae), 1 fen; Gusuibu (Rhizoma Drynariae), 1 fen, stir-baked until slightly yellow; Gouji (Scolopendrae Corpus), 1 fen, lightly stir-fried; Zhusha (Cinnabaris), 1 fen, ground fine and washed with water.
