Ma Hou Bi (Equine Throat Obstruction) refers to a condition where heat-toxic qi (vital energy carrying pathogenic heat and toxins) accumulates in the throat. The swelling extends to the cheekbones, accompanied by slight high fever, mental restlessness, abdominal distension, and frequent exhalation; hence it is named Ma Hou Bi.
For treating Ma Hou Bi with symptoms of fullness and swelling in the cheeks and face, the Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) formula is suitable.
Xijiao Xie (Hornis Cornu Tritum, powdered rhinoceros horn) (ban liang / half tael), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, Belamcanda rhizome) (san fen / three qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, Platycodon root) (san fen / three qian, remove radulae), Malin Gen (Iris lacteae var. chinensis Radix, Iris root) (san fen / three qian, cut into pieces), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, licorice root) (ban liang / half tael, stir-fried until slightly red, cut into pieces), Chuan Shengma (Polygoni Sibirici Rhizoma, Siberian bistort rhizome) (ban liang / half tael).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of three qian, decocted with one zhong zhan (approx. 200-300ml) of water and seven leaves of Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, bamboo leaf) until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs, add Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas, gypsum/niter), one qian, stir until uniform, and swallow slowly while holding in the mouth.
For treating Ma Hou Bi with symptoms of cheek swelling and sore throat, use the Longnao San (Borneol Powder) formula.
Bai Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, synthetic borneol, finely ground), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, bezoar, finely ground), Xijiao Xie (Hornis Cornu Tritum, powdered rhinoceros horn), Lingyangjiao Xie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu Tritum, powdered saiga horn), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas, gypsum/niter, finely ground), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, figwort root), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, agarwood), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, cinnabar, finely ground).
The above herbs are coarsely ground and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of three qian, decocted with one zhong zhan of water and seven leaves of Zhuye until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs, add Mayaxiao one qian... (text cuts off here).
For treating Ma Hou Bi with deep swelling in the throat extending to the cheeks, high fever, and frequent exhalation, this formula is suitable.
Take one set of Ma Xian (horse bit/mouthpiece), decoct with three da zhan (large bowls) of water until reduced to one and a half zhan. Divide into three doses.
Another prescription.
Take one handful of Mabiancaogen (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba, prostrate spurge herb), ensure it does not touch water, cut off both ends, crush and squeeze to extract juice, and administer orally.
