Commentary states: The North generates Cold. Cold generates Water. Water generates Salty flavor. Salty flavor nourishes the Kidney. The Kidney generates Marrow. Marrow nourishes the Liver. The Kidney opens into the ears. In Heaven it is Cold; in Flavor it is Salty; in Emotion it is Fear; in Odor it is Putrid; in Fluid it is Saliva; in Insects it is Scaled creatures; in Nature it manifests as Wisdom; its luster appears in the Hair; its filling is in the Bones.
The Kidney is closely related to Shen (Spirit), Jing (Essence), and Zhi (Will). The fluid within the Marrow is called Jing. When intention is focused, it is called Zhi. This is the root of life's nature and the foundation of Yuan Qi (Original Qi); it is the residence of Shen and Jing, hence termed "Jing-Zhi."
The Kidney belongs to Water and governs Winter. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is its channel, which pairs with the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. The Bladder is a Fu-organ governing the Exterior; the Kidney is a Zang-organ governing the Interior. If Kidney Qi is excessive leading to an excess of Zhi, symptoms such as abdominal distension, diarrhea, heavy body, swelling of the lower legs, asthma, cough, sweating, aversion to wind, dark complexion, and yellow urine may occur. This constitutes an Excess syndrome of Kidney Qi and should be treated with draining methods. If Kidney Qi is deficient, symptoms such as coldness of the waist and back, pain in the chest, tinnitus or deafness, cold and cold extremities, and lower abdominal pain may occur. This constitutes a Deficiency syndrome of Kidney Qi and should be treated with tonifying methods.
In Winter, if the Kidney pulse comes sinking, soft, and slippery, it is a Normal Pulse. If instead it appears large and slow, it indicates Spleen Earth overacting on Kidney Water (Earth overcoming Water), which is a Major Reversal and difficult to treat. If instead it appears floating, choppy, and short, it indicates Lung Metal overacting on Kidney Water (Mother overcoming Child); although diseased, it is treatable. If instead it appears wiry and long, it indicates Liver Wood overacting on Kidney Water (Child overcoming Mother); although diseased, it will heal spontaneously. If instead it appears floating and surging, it indicates Heart Fire overacting on Kidney Water (Fire overcoming Water); the disease is treatable.
If the Kidney pulse feels like pulling a vine, becoming harder upon pressure, it is called Kidney Disease. When the True Kidney pulse arrives, it is hard and deep, sounding like stones striking each other ("pi pi"). If the complexion is yellow-black without luster and hair is brittle and breaking, this is a death sign.
The Kidney belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian. The left side is the Kidney, and the upper part is the Mingmen (Gate of Life). The Kidney and Mingmen are the residence of Shen and Jing, and the attachment point of Yuan Qi. Symptoms include lower back pain, knotted pain in the umbilical and abdominal region, dark complexion, empty ringing in both ears, dryness of muscles and bones, and frequent, slippery urination. If the pulse is floating, fine, and rapid, this is a sign of Kidney Deficiency.
