Commentary states: The central region generates dampness. Dampness gives rise to Earth. Earth produces the sweet flavor. The sweet flavor nourishes the Spleen. The Spleen generates flesh. Flesh nourishes the Lung. The Spleen opens into the mouth. In Heaven, it corresponds to dampness; in Earth, it corresponds to Earth element; in the human body, it corresponds to the Spleen organ.
If the pulse is faint and thin, yet hard and sharp, resembling a bird pecking, a bird's spur, water leaking from a roof, or water flowing away, this indicates the death of the Spleen. The true Spleen pulse appears weak and irregularly intermittent (rapid and slow). If the complexion is cyan-yellow without luster, and hair breaks off, death ensues.
The Spleen resides in the center and prospers during the last eighteen days of each season. It receives the essence of food and drink, transforms Qi and Blood to nourish the body, circulates to sustain the physical form, and irrigates the Zang-Fu organs.
