Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage), seasonal epidemics, Fengwen (Wind-Warmth disease), and Shiwen (Damp-Warmth disease). Regardless of whether it is a dual infection of Yin and Yang syndromes or if the exterior and interior patterns are undifferentiated, or in cases of external heat with internal cold: if affected by external cold, manifesting as stiffness and pain in the head, neck, waist, and spine; fever with aversion to cold; heaviness and pain in the limbs and joints; vomiting, regurgitation, wheezing, and coughing; nasal congestion with heavy voice; as well as indigestion from raw or cold food stagnating in the epigastrium; fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm; distending pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium; palpable mass and stuffiness below the heart; cold extremities; borborygmus and diarrhea; inability to digest water and grain; spontaneous sweating; and difficult urination—all these conditions are suitable for this prescription.
Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 厚朴) [prepared by removing coarse bark and stir-frying with ginger juice]; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Atractylodes Rhizome, 白术); Saposhnikoviae Radix (Saposhnikovia Root, 防风) [prepared by removing the root tip]; Evodiae Fructus (Evodia Fruit, 吴茱萸) [prepared by washing seven times with water]; Alismatis Rhizoma (Alisma Rhizome, 泽泻); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Prepared Lateral Root of Aconite, 附子) [prepared by roasting until cracked]; Astragali Membranacei Radix (Astragalus Root, 黄芪) [prepared by removing roots and nodes]; Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Asarum Root, 细辛) [prepared by removing seedlings]; Paeoniae Radix Alba (White Peony Root, 芍药); Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Angelica Pubescens Root, 独活) [prepared by removing root tips]; Pinelliae Tuber Preparatum (Prepared Pinellia Tuber, 半夏) [prepared by washing seven times with water and processing with ginger juice]; Poria (Poria Cocos, 茯苓) [prepared by removing skin]; Bupleuri Radix (Bupleurum Root, 柴胡) [prepared by removing root tips]; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Immature Bitter Orange, 枳壳) [prepared by removing pith and stir-frying with bran, each half liang]; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root, 甘草) [roasted, one liang]; Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus (Round Cardamom Seed, 草豆蔻仁) [ten seeds, peeled]; Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Tatarian Sweetflag Rhizome, 石菖蒲) [half liang].
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. For each dose, take four qian, add one and a half sheng of water, decoct to obtain one sheng of liquid, filter out the dregs, and take hot at any time. Recovery is indicated by slight general perspiration. In cases of disharmony due to seasonal qi, drink on an empty stomach to ward off evil pathogens and epidemics.
Regulates the middle jiao and smooths qi flow, dispels wind-cold, and resolves phlegm-fluid retention. Treats chronic cold in the spleen and stomach causing distending pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium; retained phlegm in the chest and diaphragm leading to vomiting, regurgitation, and nausea; cold invasion and internal injury from raw/cold foods resulting in epigastric stuffiness, dizziness and headache, shoulder and back stiffness, limb lethargy, alternating chills and fever, and loss of appetite; or irregular blood and qi causing pinching pain in the heart and abdomen, menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, or obstruction—all these are suitable for this prescription.
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Dahurian Angelica Root, 白芷); Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome, 川芎); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root, 甘草) [roasted]; Poria (Poria Cocos, 茯苓) [prepared by removing skin]; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Chinese Angelica Root, 当归) [prepared by removing root tips]; Cinnamomi Cortex (Cinnamon Bark, 肉桂) [prepared by removing coarse bark]; Paeoniae Radix Alba (White Peony Root, 芍药); Pinelliae Tuber Preparatum (Prepared Pinellia Tuber, 半夏) [prepared by washing...]; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Atractylodes Rhizome, 白术) [soaked in rice wash...]; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Tangerine Peel, 陈皮) [removing coarse bark, four liang].
Except for Cinnamomi Cortex (Cinnamon Bark, 肉桂) and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Immature Bitter Orange, 枳壳), grind the remaining thirteen ingredients into a coarse powder. Stir-fry slowly over low heat until the color changes, spread out to cool, then mix evenly with the powders of Cinnamon Bark and Immature Bitter Orange. For each dose, take three qian, add one and a half sheng of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct to one sheng, filter out dregs, and take slightly warm. If cold qi rushes causing stabbing pain and fullness in the heart, hypochondrium, umbilicus, and abdomen; retrograde vomiting; diarrhea with undigested food; masses such as pi and jia; or pain in the bladder and small intestine qi channels, add three slices of baked fresh ginger and a little salt to decoct together. If suffering from Shanghan or seasonal epidemics with headache, body ache, aversion to wind, fever, and stiffness/pain in the nape and back, add three cun of scallion white and seven grains of fermented soybean to decoct together. If merely feeling aversion to cold, or slight fever, limb stiffness, or cold extremities, add seven grains of stir-fried Evodia Fruit and a little salt to decoct together. If experiencing disharmony of cold and heat with cough, wheezing, and chest fullness, decoct with dates. For difficult labor in women, decoct with one he of vinegar. There are no restrictions on the timing of administration.
