Ding Tu Jiu Sheng Dan (Stabilizing Vomiting and Saving Life Pill): Treats latent heat in children leading to increased phlegm-saliva, restlessness in the heart and diaphragm, high fever accompanied by cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, inability to take milk or food, retching, nausea, or severe vomiting and regurgitation.
Ingredients and Preparation: Da Xing Ji (Knoxia Root), boiled in fermented rice water, sliced, dried, and powdered (15 liang); Ru Xiang (Frankincense), separately ground; Ding Xiang (Clove), powdered (each 5 liang).
The above ingredients are thoroughly mixed and ground into a uniform powder, then processed into sand-like granules.
Administration: For every 1 liang of melted beeswax, add 2.5 qian of honey, and mix to form pills the size of yellow millet grains. One pill per year of age is administered. If restlessness is present, administer with water decocted from raw sesame seeds and Portulaca oleracea (Purslane). If vomiting and regurgitation occur, administer with a decoction of Clove and Purslane. Dosage should be adjusted according to the child's deficiency or excess condition. It should be taken after meals and before bedtime. This medicine clears heat and resolves phlegm-saliva, directs qi downward through the diaphragm to stop vomiting and regurgitation. It is contraindicated for cases of persistent vomiting due to stomach deficiency and cold injury. Vomiting and regurgitation in children should be treated promptly; if prolonged, it may develop into slow convulsions (Man Jing Feng). Therefore, this medicine should always be kept on hand for emergencies.
Wu Fu Hua Du Dan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill): Treats accumulated toxic-heat in children, manifesting as fright, startle, mania, and restlessness, red cheeks, dry throat, sores in the mouth and tongue, restless sleep at night, delirious speech, irritability, thirst, and the occurrence of boils and carbuncles.
Ingredients and Preparation: Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), slightly stir-fried; Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), washed and dried (each 6 liang); Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), ground; Ya Xiao (Niter), calcined; Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), de-rhizomed (each 2 liang); Fu Ling (Poria), peeled and sliced (4 liang); Jin Bo (Gold Leaf) (8 pieces).
The above ingredients are processed into a fine powder. The ground medicines are mixed uniformly with the powder, and refined honey is used to form pills, where each liang of powder makes twelve pills. For each year of age, one pill is divided into four doses and administered with Mentha water (Peppermint infusion). Additionally, after the resolution of rashes, if residual toxins attack the oral cavity and teeth causing bloody saliva and foul odor, dissolve one pill in fresh juice of Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) and apply to the inside of the mouth using a chicken feather. For heat-type gan disease causing sallow emaciation and nyctalopia (night blindness), administer with water from rinsing aged foxtail millet. Take after meals and before bedtime.
Ling Sha Gui Ming Dan (Cinnabar Returning Life Pill): Treats accumulated pathogenic heat in children, characterized by lingering tidal fever, red cheeks, dry mouth, restlessness in the heart and diaphragm, difficulty in expectorating phlegm-saliva, restless sleep, rising phlegm-saliva inducing convulsions. It also treats unresolved stagnation, prolonged diarrhea, abdominal pain, irritability, thirst, vomiting, and retching that do not respond to other harmonizing medications.
Ingredients and Preparation: Ba Dou (Croton Seed), de-heart, de-membrane, de-skin, stir-fried until cooked, and ground into a flour-like oil (315 seeds); Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis), ground; Long Nao (Borneol), ground; She Xiang (Musk), ground (small amounts of each).
The above ingredients are mixed and ground uniformly. Six liang of refined yellow beeswax and three qian of white sand honey are melted together uniformly to form pills the size of mung beans. Two pills per dose are administered with an infusion of Gold Foil and Mentha (Peppermint). Dosage should be adjusted according to age. For convulsive epilepsy, administer with Borneol, Calomel (Ni Fen), and honey water. Before administration, soak the pills in cold water for a short time; this yields particularly rapid results.
