When using acupuncture, first perform Yin numbers (operations belonging to Yin, such as counter-clockwise twisting or heavy pressing with light lifting). When the practitioner feels the arrival of Qi, gently twist and lightly lift the needle; the Qi will then circulate. This method can be used to treat diseases characterized by coldness and numbness.
When needling the hands and feet, if one wishes to make the Qi ascend, press down with fingers; if one wishes to make the Qi descend, press up with fingers. Hold the needle head in place for a moment, and the Qi will naturally circulate. This is the "Red Phoenix Shaking Head" technique.
The Coiling Needle Method: For example, when needling the Zhongwan (CV12) and Guanyuan (CV4) acupoints, first insert the needle 2.5 cun, withdraw it by 1 cun, leaving 1.5 cun inside, and coil the needle. If one intends to treat diseases in the Upper Jiao Baozhong (uterus/abdominal cavity), direct the needle head upward, insert 0.2 cun, apply the tonification method, and drive the Qi upward. If there is disease below the umbilicus, withdraw the needle by 0.2 cun.
