Treatment for wind-induced toothache and swelling, whether recent or chronic, with immediate effect after one application.
Quanxie (Scorpio, one piece, dried on a tile over fire), Gaoliangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, one piece, approximately two cun long).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Dip a finger in the medicine and apply it as if using dentifrice. Rub until the affected area feels thoroughly warm. Spit out a small amount of saliva, then rinse with salt water. This is highly effective. It also treats swelling and pain in the cheeks and jaw.
Previously, while serving in the Huaixi government office, in the winter of the Jiyou year, I was ordered to Hezhou. Upon reaching Hanshan County, my toothache became severe. Suddenly, at the shop of a barber (razor and nail clipper practitioner), I obtained a pinch of herbal medicine. Soaked it in hot water for a short while, at a temperature suitable to preference, and applied the liquid to the painful area with a finger. The pain ceased immediately. The next day, when the person left, I recorded this prescription to treat others, with many successful cases.
The herb used above is Zoumian Dizhongzi (Seeds of Allium macrostemon var. rugosum), known in Bencao as Disong (Glehniae Fructus). Harvest it after frost. Use a small amount soaked in water. Some say this is Heshi (Pyrrosiae Folium or Carpesii Fructus), but Bencao lists a different Heshi, so there is a distinction. Shen Kuo in his Bitan specifically discusses Disong, stating: its seed is named Heshi. What I used is indeed this substance. Qian Jicheng’s formula uses one branch of Heshi, broken and placed between the teeth. Supervisor Gao said: decoct Heshi in rice vinegar and use it to rinse the mouth; the pain stops immediately, which is especially wonderful.
Another prescription: Treats wind-swelling and qi-swelling toothache, as well as wind-carious toothache. For those suffering from toothache where all other medicines fail, use this. Ma Minshe said: A village old woman suffered from toothache where all medicines failed; using this cured her immediately.
Use one small fresh loofah sponge gourd (Luffae Fructus). Coat with salt, burn to ash, preserve the medicinal nature, and grind into powder. Apply to the painful or swollen area. Recovery occurs once saliva flows out completely. This is a family-prescribed formula of Yan Yuexuan that has proven effective repeatedly. When he suffered from this condition, one trial allowed him to sleep. Later, he mixed the ash with water and applied it to the swollen cheek area, which was especially effective. Previously, this formula was used for carious teeth, but according to Mr. Yuexuan, this substance is excellent for dispelling wind; however, it is ineffective for carious teeth.
