Treats wind spasm (wind-induced spasms), characterized by trismus (lockjaw) where the mouth cannot open, rigidity and straightening of the back and body, with seizures resembling epilepsy.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [remove nodes, decoct first and skim foam, dry], Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo, 独活) [each 1 liang 5 qian]; Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Shengma, 升麻), Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Gegen, 葛根) [each 0.5 liang]; Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Lingyangjiao, 羚羊角) [shavings], Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi, 桂枝).
Crush the herbs. Each dose is 6 qian bi (approx. 2-3 grams), with 2 zhan (approx. 400 ml) of water, soaked overnight. Decoct on the next morning to obtain 1 zhan of liquid, remove dregs, and take warm. Cover with clothing to avoid external wind. Regularly taking 2-3 doses after the Spring Equinox each year prevents epidemic cold damage and various wind-pathogen diseases.
For the above condition, use 1 sheng (approx. 200 ml) of Bamboo Juice (Zhuli, 竹沥), divided into five doses. Take frequently while slightly warm; this is highly effective.
Treats wind spasm accompanied by coma, foaming at the mouth, convulsions, rigidity of the spine, and postpartum wind-stroke with lockjaw.
Take black soybeans, stir-fry until charred, pour good wine over them to extract the clear juice (1 zhan). Add finely chopped Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo, 独活) 3 qian, decoct to 7/10 volume, and take warm. Continue administration until recovery. This decoction effectively dispels wind and resolves blood stasis. It is also effective for traumatic injuries during pregnancy or retained dead fetus in the uterus. This refers to the usage of Guijing Tang (Angelica and Schizonepeta Decoction) and Duhuo Jiu (Angelica Pubescens Wine). When humans are disturbed by pathogenic factors, disease ensues. Whether it involves Qi, Blood, Phlegm, Fluids, Wind, Cold, Summerheat, or Dampness, and whether the Zang-Fu organs, exterior-interior relationships, cold-heat, or deficiency-excess patterns are involved, there are specific sites of pathology. Medication methods must investigate the root cause before treatment can succeed. Otherwise, as former sages said, "hunting without knowing where the rabbit is, casting a wide net over the wilderness, hoping to catch one," the strategy is too flawed. How can one rely on such techniques? Another prescription uses Radix Notopterygii (Qianghuo, 羌活); sweating indicates cure.
Treats wind spasm with coma, foaming at the mouth, convulsions, and spinal rigidity. Universally applicable for postpartum wind-stroke.
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, 当归), Spica Schizonepetae (Jingjie Sui, 荆芥穗) [equal parts].
Grind into fine powder. Each dose is 2 qian, with 1 zhan of water and a little wine, decoct to 7/10 volume, and administer via gavage. If the jaw is tightly closed, pry it open with a copper spoon, and apply medicine to the mouth using a chicken feather. Alternatively, mix with urine from an uncircumcised boy, or substitute Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎) for Danggui, also stir-fried.
Treats stroke with opisthotonos (arching of the back like a bow), mental restlessness, and trismus with inability to speak.
Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xijiao, 犀角) [shavings], Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [remove roots and nodes], Radix Notopterygii (Qianghuo, 羌活), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, 附子) [processed, skin and navel removed], Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [skin and tip removed, stir-fried with bran, each 1 liang], Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng, 防风) [remove rhizome], Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin, 桂心), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu, 白术), Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 人参), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Poria (Baifuling, 白茯苓), Radix Asari (Xixin, 细辛), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui, 当归) [each 3 fen], Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) [2 liang], Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao, 甘草) [prepared].
Pulverize and sieve into a powder. Each dose is 4 qian, with 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200 ml) of water and half a fen of fresh ginger, decoct to 5/10 volume. Remove dregs, add 1 he (approx. 20 ml) of Bamboo Juice (Zhuli, 竹沥), boil briefly for 1-2 boils. Take warm at any time.
