The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: In women who have just given birth, if the pulse is deep, slippery, and small, it indicates survival; if the pulse is full, large, wiry, and rapid/tight, it indicates death. It further states: After childbirth, if the cunkou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is wiry, rapid, and irregular, it indicates death; if the pulse is deep and fine but remains rooted when pressed to the bone, it indicates survival. If a woman develops illness after childbirth due to contraction of wind or cold pathogens, presenting with wheezing and shoulder breathing, if the pulse is full, floating, and slow/relaxed, it indicates survival; if the pulse is small and tight, it indicates death.

Zhu Danxi stated: A fine and small pulse before pregnancy, and a flooding and large pulse after childbirth, are both signs of fatal conditions. He further stated: Before delivery, the pulse should be flooding and rapid; since delivery has occurred, if the pulse remains flooding and rapid as before, how can death be avoided? The *Mai Jing* states: For postpartum pulses, slow, slippery, deep, and fine qualities are appropriate; full, large, firm, solid, choppy, and rapid qualities are all critical/dangerous.
