"Infant Grasping the Mother's Heart" refers to a difficult labor condition where the fetus tightly grips the mother's chest area in the birth canal. In this emergency, use pig heart blood, mix with five qian of Ru Xiang (Frankincense), and administer with boiled wine; the infant's hands will then open. If the placenta fails to descend, use one liang of Hua Rui Shi (Flower Porphyry Stone) and four liang of Liu Huang (Sulfur). Place them in a jar, seal firmly with salt mud, calcine, and grind into powder. Mix one qian with child's urine and wine to take orally; the placenta will then be expelled. When the placenta has not yet descended, the parturient can push her own hair into her mouth, assuming a posture resembling vomiting, which will cause the placenta to drop naturally.
In cases where amniotic fluid has dried up and the fetus refuses to descend, urgently administer a large dose of Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with one or two he of Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), decocted with flowing water, and drink frequently. The fetus will then descend along with the fluid. This is known as the method of "urgently opening branch rivers." For those with deficiency, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root).
*Zhun Sheng* records: For placental retention, heat a clay oil lamp cup on fire, place it upside down on the parturient's umbilicus, and have a man press his foot against the cup to hold it steady; the placenta will then descend. This is a rural method that proves effective.
Failure of the pubic symphysis to open (Jiao Gu Bu Kai) may result from inherent weakness of Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) and lack of prenatal care, leading to an inability of Qi and Blood to circulate. Use Jia Wei Xiong Gui Tang (Modified Chuanxiong and Angelica Decoction) with one liang of Zha Shu Zhi (Zelkova Branch), administered in a large dose. Externally, apply Ma You (Sesame Oil) mixed with Hua Shi Mo (Talcum Powder) into the vaginal opening; the pubic symphysis will gradually open.
Da Sheng San (Da Sheng Powder), also known as Zi Su Yin (Perilla Infusion), is an excellent formula for prenatal care and a fine prescription for inducing labor.
